DeSantis hammers climate change alarmists in no uncertain terms in Idalia’s aftermath

GOP presidential candidate and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis hammered climate change alarmists in no uncertain terms during Hurricane Idalia's aftermath.

DeSantis cited an 1896 storm that reportedly had 125 mph winds and Florida's Labor Day hurricane in 1935, saying during a Sunday press conference that those storms resulted in massive destruction and deaths.

"So, I think the notion that somehow hurricanes are something new, that’s just false. And we’ve got to stop politicizing the weather and stop politicizing natural disasters," DeSantis said. "We know from history there’s been times when it’s very busy in Florida, late ‘40s, early ‘50s, you had a lot of hits of significant hurricanes."

"So, I think sometimes people need to take a breath and get a little bit of perspective here," he said. "But the notion that somehow if we just adopt, you know, very left-wing policies at the federal level that somehow we will not have hurricanes, that is a lie. And that is people trying to take what happened with different types of storms and use that as a pretext to advance their agenda on the backs of people that are suffering. And that’s wrong, and we’re not going to do that in the state of Florida."

...

"I think that the state of Florida, we prepare for this stuff. We were prepared. We responded," he said.

He may not be a good public speaker, but DeSantis is more of a true leader than ANYONE in the sordid, fetid and truly stupid Democrat party. Bastille USA day is eagerly awaited. Expect a guillotine shortage.

DeSantis moving back to his core strengths. Saying what must be said, and doing what must be done.

Good for him.

desanctomonious is a phony that most of us see right through. That’s why he is losing so badly, even in his home state he is down by 20 to 30 points.

The following quotes suggest that excessive coastal groundwater extraction is a significant problem:

“Sea levels across Florida are as much as 8 inches higher than they were in 1950, and the rate of sea level rise is accelerating. For instance, sea levels around Virginia Key have risen by 8 inches since 1950, but they have been rising by 1 inch every 3 years over the past 10 years, based on tide gauge data.”

https://climatecenter.fsu.edu/topics/sea-level-rise

“Between 1901 and 2018, the average global sea level rose by 15–25 cm (6–10 in), or an average of 1–2 mm per year. This rate accelerated to 4.62 mm/yr for the decade 2013–2022.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_level_rise

“Finally, in 1880, at the same time that an America torn asunder by the Civil War was stitching itself back together, the top of Plymouth Rock was returned to the harbor and reunited with its base. The date “1620” was carved on the stone’s surface, replacing painted numerals.”

In the last few years three large St. Augustine lawns have been laid on properties on my street. These St. Augustine lawns need to be watered and ground water is used. My Pensacola Bahia lawn is drought tolerant. Bahia grass has deep roots.

Sea level has risen 8 inches?! I just saw a picture of the Key West buoy sitting high and drive just as it has for the past 40+ years, since I first visited it. The beaches are still more-or-less in the same places around Florida. Battery Park in New York City is still about the same. Heck, the Statue of Liberty hasn’t flooded.

You and he have a problem with honesty, because that is just made-up BS. And why is desanctomonious losing so badly? He can't even carry his home state. Hell, he can't carry a single state in the whole country. He's a nobody and the only reason he is governor is because Trump carried him there. That should be more then painfully obvious now, even to the likes of sycophants like yourself.

Absolute sea level has been rising about a millimeter or 2 per year for many years and is not accelerating. Sea level change relative to land mass varies widely accordingly to local conditions of geology, and subsidence from various sources. Much of the east coast and gulf coast is slowly sinking, which makes for great misleading headlines about sea level rise.

Even if you support Trump, DeSantis says what he means and does what he says. He is a fine conservative and deserves respect even as a competitor of Trump. There is nothing false about him.

Little reported facts: more people live close to the water now than at anytime in our history. This means more houses, buildings, etc to hit when a storm hits.

Factor in bidenflation and the cost of a storm increases dramatically.

So don't freak out over the weather channel and other outlets that scream, "costliest storm ever....millions under storm threats, etc."

The bigger story would be IF we weren't having storms form this time of year.

Actually, Joe, what most of us here see is the sad fact that you've been doing the keyboard warrior thing for far too long, and your brain is fried.

Take a vacation. A long one. It'll do you a load of good.

DeSantis is not phony.

DeSantis doesn’t have the people skills Trump has, but Trump has better people skills than any Republican politician I can think of. I also think Trump’s people skills exceed those of Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. Living most of one’s life in a densely populated city like New York helps develop people skills.

The polls suggest we now have four choices, Trump, DeSantis, Ramaswamy and Haley:

If the Democrats take Trump out, then the choice will be among DeSantis, Ramaswamy and Haley.

What I was trying to say is that excessive coastal groundwater extraction is a problem that needs to be addressed in Florida.
