More Ukrainian drones attack Russia after planes hit on airfield

Ukrainian drones attacked more targets in Russia late on Wednesday, a night after drones struck at least six regions deep within Russia in one of the broadest volleys yet of Kyiv's campaign to turn the tables on Moscow.

One of the drone strikes, targeting an airfield far from Ukraine's borders, destroyed military transport planes on the ground.

The previous night, Russian officials described attacks on Bryansk and five other regions, including Moscow region, and Pskov in the north, where four military transport planes were damaged in a huge blaze at an airfield.

The Russian foreign ministry said the attacks would "not go unpunished" and the drones could not have reached so far into Russian territory without Western help.

In Russia, the governor of Pskov posted video on Telegram showing a huge fire with the sounds of sirens and an explosion at the air base. Other video posted online showed anti-aircraft systems in action around the city, 32 km (20 miles) east of Russia's border with NATO-member Estonia.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia was working out where the drones were launched from to prevent further strikes. President Vladimir Putin had been informed immediately, as would be the case in any such "massive attacks", Peskov said.

The Kyiv government confirmed the Russian planes had been destroyed in Pskov, without commenting on the nature of their destruction. It generally withholds comment on strikes on territory inside Russia though it says it has a right to hit military targets.

"Yes, four IL-76 transport planes were destroyed in Pskov at an airfield, they are beyond repair. Also, several other of those (aircraft) are damaged, but the information is being checked," Andriy Yusov, a spokesman for Ukraine’s GUR military agency, told Reuters.

Why do you think he hates NATO so much?

Yes, their encroachment would probably bother anyone who looked at them as an adversary, and so we will just gloss over the fact that he is looking at NATO that way in the first place, but by it’s very mission NATO exists to protect the sovereignty of it’s members. Why should this be a problem?

Unlike the Russian shotgun style attacks earlier in the war, these attacks appear to be precisely targeted at destroying as many airframes as they can.

Not sure on exact numbers, but the Russians don’t have a whole lot of transports in flying condition to begin with. Four hull losses is going to hurt.

By the way, a lot of people scaremonger about this proxy war escalating into WWiii, and I don’t doubt that it’s a real possibility, including being most probable since cuban missile crisis, but these drones forebode of a very dark future. These things are still barely out of their infancy.

Wait until they're used domestically.

“the drones could not have reached so far into Russian territory without Western help.”

Modest drones could be smuggled into Russia by flying over a border, transported by motor vehicle to near an airbase, and then launched.

“You don’t have F16s”

One only needs the missiles the F-16 would carry.

Russians have a nature of being paranoid, and their history somewhat explains that(though they seem to forget their past “aggressions” esp that little 1939 thing, but I think that is just a pretext like denazification, globullhomo… this is Putin lamenting the fall of Soviet Union and the power they had back then and recognizing this is his last best hope of getting any of that back

Big palm to the face

How is that Ukrainian counteroffensive going? Three months, 50,000 dead Ukrainians in it and more 400,000 overall and Ukraine hasn't reached the frontline of Russian defense.

You’d think that with all the devastation the CIA... I mean Ukraine... was raining down on RUZZIA the war would have been over a year ago and the CIA... I mean Ukraine... would be marching through the streets of Moscow as we speak.

It’s working better than the Russian war plan. The Russian army has been going backward in Ukraine since 2022.

Ukraine's Western Sponsors Running Out of Ammo & Out of Time

Aug 31, 2023<

Update on the conflict in Ukraine for August 31, 2023:

- The Western media is trying to spin Ukrainian gains within the security or “gray zone” ahead of Russia’s first of several defense lines as a “turning point” in the offensive;

- Ukraine’s offensive potential has been exhausted with the West struggling to find arms and ammunition to replace Ukrainian losses;

- The West is even struggling to pull together large numbers of antiquated and inappropriate equipment like the post-WW2 Leopard 1 tank;

- Meanwhile Ukraine continues conducting drone strikes in Russia, achieving questionable PR value and little else;

- A recent Ukrainian drone strike on an airport hosting Il-76 strategic airlift aircraft damaged 2. To put that in context, Russia operates over 100 of these aircraft and has production capacity to build up to 12 annually;

- Ukraine’s sponsors are unable to sustain the conflict “for as long as it takes,” and only for as long as they have arms and ammunition to supply Ukraine in sufficient quantities;

“ Ukraine hasn’t reached the frontline of Russian defense.”

Time to check back for an update - the Surovikin line has been breached in the direction of Tokmak/Melitopol, and Russian occupation authorities have evacuated Tokmak.

The transport planes struck (IL-76) were the ones that were used to drop paratroopers from the 76th VDV, stationed Pskov. They were also used to rush heavy weapons and ammo to halt Ukraine’s Kharkiv offensive last September. They won’t be doing either, this time around.

you Russian stooges are getting desperate

as long as Ukraine wants to fight, we’ll supply them

The Russians made the mistake of using some cluster munitions. That opened the door to the US supplying such to Ukraine. The US has huge inventories of these - most were supposed to be scrapped, but the funding to do so “conveniently” got left out of the budget.

A while back I found a bit dated Human Rights Watch article about those inventories. Some web searching of often conflicting sources and a bit of head scratching, regarding what may have been scrapped since, adds up to around 20 million of these munitions in various forms, artillery shells, missiles, bombs, etc., that the US still has. (That’d probably be around a BILLION bomblets - if one assumes a 4% failure to detonate rate, and 30% of inventory used, that gives some meat to HRW’s worries about the potential unexploded ordnance eventually laying around.)

If Ukraine had the means to break and keep broken Russia’s military logistics to Crimea, this war would likely be over pretty quickly.
