The man who killed three people in a racist shooting in a Jacksonville Dollar General store had legally purchased the guns despite previously being involuntarily institutionalized for mental health issues, the sheriff said.

Sheriff T.K. Waters called Ryan Christopher Palmeter, 21, a “maniac” but there was nothing that could have stopped him from owning firearms.

“There was no flag that could have come up to stop him from purchasing those guns,” Waters said at a Sunday news conference. “They were 100% legal.”….

So they were not purchased legally?

Baker act only strips rights during confinement. It’s not a permanent thing and that’s Very good. The whole thing of being locked up by accusation alone is awful. And losing rights that way is even worse.

The term does not include a person in a mental institution for observation

Thank you. Since he was only in for 72 hours under the Baker Act, he probably falls under that exception.

Perhaps your interpretation of this:

In 2017, Ryan Christopher Palmeter was committed under the Florida Baker Act, which allows family members to involuntarily detain and institutionalize loved ones for emergency mental health services.

differs from mine, but I distinctly see the exact phrase "INVOLUTARY DETAIN AND INSTITUTIONALIZE" in the above text.

Publicizing manifestos is exactly what these crazies want. Obviously it would encourage more shootings. The people who do this stuff are suicidal nut jobs. Who care what twisted justification they imagine for themselves. They should all be memory holed.

Baker act isn’t permanent like a court ordered involuntarily. You can easily expunge it.

A stripped lower is still a firearm, and not a ghost gun.

He had a PA-15 milled lower from Palmetto Arms. Bet you soup to nuts that Palmetto Arms gets sued and this becomes justification for banning ghost guns.

His lower had a serial number. It required a Form 4473 to purchase. He obviously lied about the involuntary mental health commitment on the 4473. Palmetto has no obligation to do more than check the 4473 for selection of any disqualifying information. For some purchases, a NICS background check is done. Again, a NICS check is only as good as the underlying database. If the mental health confinement was not reported/recorded in the NICS database, there was no indication of a problem to the seller.

The "ghost gun" label applies to 80% complete lowers that have no serial number. Additional work is required to make them functional. There is no "ghost gun" argument to be made here. It was a simple purchase of a serialized firearm with undetected perjury on the part of the buyer.

This is only news because a white neo-nazi type did it. So, a neo-nazi killed three blacks. I am sure the Crips killed more than three blacks today, and the Bloods, and all the other black gun thugs, too.

Sad that it has gotten to this point where three black murder victims are hardly worth thinking about, but how can anyone think about them when there are so many others getting gunned down everyday by other blacks. What makes these three victims any different? Black people’s own behavior has made them people that I no longer care about. If they do not care about their own people, then why should I?

Yep and the Dr that he saw in the involuntary hold didn’t feel the need to hold him longer, requiring a Judge to sign which would have then been reported to gun clearing folks. So you can lie and get away with it, if it hasn’t been reported.

Right, to be held longer then 72 hrs, Dr has to get court order from Judge, then it gets reported to gun folks and would be in database. He didn’t keep him longer then 72hrs so no flag.

I resent having this story on all the news outlets when they suppress the other types (even before the victims are buried).

As a public service in honor of their memory, here is one story from the past.

Murders of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom (carjacked, kidnapped, raped and slain).

May they rest in peace. Article from 10 years ago.

I have a PA-15. Why would you call it a ghost gun?

Is there any situation where you can buy a gun and need a 4473 and also not get a background check? Ffl sales need both and private sales need neither.

Lying on a 4473 is not a crime. Just ask Hunter.
