Arizona readies for Kari Lake and a contentious Senate race

Kari Lake’s announcement that she’ll decide by the end of the year whether she’s running for Senate in Arizona adds to growing signals that the Grand Canyon State is headed toward a contentious, high-stakes race for Sen. Kyrsten Sinema’s (I) seat.

Sinema’s seat is a top 2024 target for Republicans looking to seize control of the upper chamber, where Democrats hold a tenuous 51-49 lead that includes Sinema — who dropped her affiliation as a Democrat after last year’s midterm elections.

This thread could turn out two ways. People who don't really like her and the other ones will say she'll never win because of the cheat!

Does this mean there will be Sinema running as independent, a Democrat running and Lake?

Or will Sinema run as Republican?

Personally...I don’t like her...she is what she is...a media contributor. She lives off Trump.

The rats now control the Governor, AG and SOS. They also riigged the voter ID prop to fail. Lake doesn’t have much of a chance and neither does Trump

I like Sinema a hell of a lot better than Lake. Can she possibly run both as an Independent and on a party???

The perception of her among the average voter is that she was a sore loser.

That’s a key question, if she runs and an independent, if the Democrats also nominate someone, that would really open the door for Kari Lake.

Personally, I think Kari Lake would have been much more effective as a Governor instead of a Senator, in the Senate she will have very little real power to enact legislation if she gets elected.

The problem the Republicans have to avoid giving them the best chance to win is not fight each other, no “Get the Hell Out” of Lake rallies, no wait until election day to vote, etc...

Run a smart campaign and unify the party and she has a solid chance otherwise the accusations of a fixed election will run wild.

Lake needs to run for Congress and build some credibility. She ran a mostly great governor campaign but made some key mistakes.

She is going to have a very tough time with statewide races coming off the loss. She needs to change the narrative. I like her and she’s very talented at managing messages. If she needs to be known for something other than a Trump ally and fighting stolen elections. She needs wins and Ellis issues to champion.

Where in Arizona do you live?

Hardly anyone outside of the ASU campus thinks Hobbs actually won.

The Arizona electorate will be 1% more Democrat (give or take) in 2024 vs. 2022 on natural demographics (Republicans dying, Democrats turning 18 and moving into higher-propensity-voting age bands) and another 1% more Democrat (give or take) in Presidential year turnout. Which Democrats is Lake getting to vote for her in 2024 that didn’t in 2022?

Independents can run and win. It doesn’t matter if the Dems run someone against Sinema. She can still run and win.

Lieberman in CT endorsed McCain for prez and lost the Dem nomination to another candidate because of opposing Obama. He created his own party called CT for Lieberman and won re-election. He caucused with the Dems and they did not dare take his committee chairmanships away.

Sinema has navigated the Independent-minded Arizona voters. Lake has not. The voting public there is not what it was and the GOP can’t force a candidate to victory anymore. Lots of independents.

“Independents can run and win.”

Agree. Not being affiliated with either party might well be beneficial. A lot of people see both parties as being corrupt and self-serving.

“The voting public there is not what it was...”

You could say the same thing about the country as a whole. The culture and things that people value have changed in profound ways.

You have to admire the political prescience of former Democrat (now Independent) Senator Kyrsten Sinema.

Sinema bolted from the Democrat Party 18 months before it might become an issue in the 2024 Senate election.

Trump was understandably angry when the pic was taken but wish he had struck a more dignified pose. Then again the people who took the shot probably took several in hopes of getting one that would have the desired effect for them.
