The Soviet Union purposely screwed up the political borders to make regions “non-coherent.” They also moved the ethnic residents to different regions and flooded the area with ethnically Russian settlers. There was also a lot of ethnic cleansing where the Russians used other ethnicities to reduce the population of rival ethnicities to further prevent any future where someone might try to replace Russian leadership with the more local type. Having said all that many of these regions are not viable by themselves. I understand why they don’t want any political leadership from groups that historically “cleansed” them in the past. But if you’re landlocked and have no resources, what kind of nation will you make? I certainly hope there is a Hell and the people who helped create this problem are burning in it.

All right, I'll be Sirius. Nationalism, which began in the mid 1800s and hit its global stride by the mid-20th century, is historically abnormal. Most people are tribal, whether it be the Avar of Dagestan or Polk County in central Florida. From time to time throughout history one group rises up and conquers all the tribal areas, forming an empire (Indus, Babylonian/Persian/Greek/Parthian, Roman, Mongol, Russian, British, Japanese) which lasts for a while, then disintegrates into tribal groups. Most nations are too big to be tribal and too small to be imperial, which is why they generally don't work.
The US lasted as long as it did because the federal government allowed the states freedom to choose laws for themselves, who in turn allowed the "tribal areas" freedom to enforce laws for themselves, but technology and totalitarianism concentrates all power in the DS. This creates a catch-22: we despise the deep state because it has taken our freedom, but when that collapses, the result will not be freedom but tribalism.

Yes, being a Russian ally isn’t a very fun position. You gain the benefit that Russia will protect you from your enemies, but you have the problem that no one will protect you from Russia.
How many Russian/Soviet bigwigs were from Georgia? Wasn’t Kruschev? That makes them Vichy-types. Let them suffer.
Russia looking at expansion again? This will surely be a shock to those anti Ukraine freepers who believe Russia is just a benevolent old uncle wanting the best for its neighbors.
So Abkhazia is putting everyone on notice that we do not intend to commit suicide (in case anything happens to us).

The people of the Caucuses are martial people born to resilience by a thousand years of fights with the people of the next valley over.
By contrast the Russian people have been beaten into subservience by the brutal repression of whoever is in charge.
That makes Russians easy prey for people from the mountains and the Soviet period saw many from those small minorities ruling over the Russian masses.
