Republicans lead bipartisan efforts to fight porn, forcing industry to retreat in some states

More than half a dozen Republican-led states have done what previously seemed impossible: Changing the multi-billion-dollar online porn industry through legislation and regulation that stop minors from accessing it.

Louisiana led the charge by becoming the first state to require online pornography users to show a government-issued ID to prove they are 18 or older before accessing pornography.

Democrat Gov. John Bel Edwards, who is no fan of the state's Republican super-majority in the legislature, signed the bill restricting pornography access one week after it hit his desk.

"I promise you he has no qualms about vetoing our bills," Republican state Rep. Laurie Schlegel told Politico last week about the pornography bill she sponsored in Louisiana.

Since the bill went into effect in January, traffic on Pornhub dropped 80% in Louisiana, according to Ethical Capital Partners, which owns the adult website. Putting that in perspective, Pornhub is the No. 1 adult website and the No. 12 website in the world, having received more than 2.5 billion visits last month, according to SimilarWeb.com, which monitors internet traffic.

Six other states – Arkansas, Montana, Mississippi, Utah, Virginia and Texas – passed laws restricting minors from accessing pornography since Louisiana passed its law last year. The laws were passed overwhelmingly in the state legislatures by both parties. At least 16 more states introduced similar legislation.

In Utah, Mississippi and Virginia, where porn regulations have been in effect for months, Pornhub simply stopped operating.

Oh the priority of the Republican Party. Google is where kids get porn. They don’t pay or need an ID. This is like democrats going after guns. People will get guns no matter what if they want them. Same with porn.

````````````````````````````````````````````````
What percent of that 80% are adults who simply don’t want to show their identification to a porn site?
And if people use an ordinary VPN, how does any network know if they are coming from Utah or California? I don't understand the "stopped operating".
Agreed.
The GOP seems to be looking more for donations than getting anything real done.
This has been going on since 2000.
When the SCOTUS legalized porn back in the early 1970s I wonder if they realized what a can of worms they had opened, and how bad it would be beginning in the 1970s till now.
Those 80% are just using a VPN now.
Republicans are trash.
Porn is a focus, but illegal immigration is not.
Useless, complicit %#@&*$@.
I agree there are work-arounds. But is Google hosting the porn videos on youtube? Or is Google facilitating it by providing the search to connect users to various porn content sites? If it's the latter then any search engine, not just Goggle, will do. I wouldn't be surprised if there are search engines specializing specifically in porn searches.
Back in the 1970s, nobody anticipated the internet.
So they had no conception of how easily available and widespread pornography would become.
Since the bill went into effect in January, traffic on Pornhub dropped 80% in Louisiana,
Accdg to another recent article on the subject, Pornhub has blacklisted those several states in protest of the new legislation. That could explain part of the drop in traffic.
Tempest in a teacup. There are millions of other porn sites.
It’s all fun and games until the Democrat fascists adopt the Louisiana playbook and ban conservative websites and sites like Freerepublic.
Republicans are idiots. The lack of technical savvy in the GOP is a running joke for most people under 40. A 12 year old knows damn well how to setup a VPN connection and appear from somewhere else.
It’s truly pathetic.
It’s also so far down on the triage necessity of our country’s issues.
Immigration, debt, economy, crime, etc.
That’s the big thing: porn watchers want private anonymity. That’s why video rentals replaced xxx movie houses, and were in turn replaced by internet streaming.
It will induce the creation of new ways to transmit porn which bypasses all attempts to regulate, and in so doing will allow currently forbidden types of porn to proliferate.
Better would be to require porn sites to register their names, and have ISPs give the ability to the bill-payer to turn on parental controls that block such access.
Do a google image search for “tits” and other keywords with search-safe turned off, and you will see.
