What do you mean by populists and nationalists?
In the United States, the term “populist” originally referred
to the Populist Party and related left-wing movements of the
late 19th century that wanted to curtail the power of the corporate
and financial establishment. Later the term “populist” began to
apply to any anti-establishment movement.
That’s Trump’s platform, populism and nationalism. And he’s been running the party for getting close to 10 years now.
“ Present yourself in a positive manner in the coming primary battles.”
- Karl Rove
“Populist” is one of those terms people throw around, like “Fascist” when somebody disagrees with a politician.
I am a Nationalist, because I believe Nations are the way to organize the diverse peoples on this planet, and they should live in a country where there are shared values and culture. And they should be free to trade in a matter that benefits that nation, and not be dictated by NGOs.
A good definition of populist, in my book, is one who has grievances with the government, or the rich. Trump stokes this hard, especially on the anti-government side. However, a populist’s solution is not to reduce the government, as would a conservative, but the populist simply wants to re-target it, typically with taking more from the rich, and giving to the less fortunate.
I support nationalism, but only to an extent. Because nationalism, when taken to its final form, is centralization of government at the national level, with little to no state independence. It’s also expecting people to actually worship the state, and its leaders. Kim Yung Un is the ultimate nationalist, for example.
Look at this, from just yesterday, or recently...
In a Christian Nationalist rant, Michael Flynn told pastors to “put the Bible aside and read the Constitution” during their sermons.

The GOP has ceased to be a viable national party they just don’t know it yet or maybe they do and don’t care. The only thing that could save them now is a Trump victory in 2024. My advice to The GOP, protect Trump as if your own lives depend on it because they do.
It's true that a dem like Stacy Abrams might claim to be a "populist" and say that voting by mail is anti-elite (just the opposite IMO). You might want to ask yourself if all "populists" fit that description. You would not be alone. Limbaugh, for all the good ideas he had, expressed the same fallacy. Many of us are anti-elite and believe the gov is way too big. "Populist" is a slippery term.

There’s countless articles out there describing Trump’s commitment to populism, and and his plans for seeking redress from large government. Here’s one from back in 2016 that actually has samples of him brushing off conservative concerns in that primary’s debates. It’s a good read, with many good points, I listed one below.

His rivals kept trying to stop him by proving that he’s not a true conservative, just a big-government liberal in disguise. Their attacks, though, only strengthened Trump’s hand: His supporters didn’t want a true conservative—they wanted a champion.
One more bona fide for Trump. He won’t owe the bigwigs any favors. This will be an election when paradox comes full circle. Something fools cannot and will not grasp.
Trump’s strategy differs from your depth of experience and expertise.
