you might want to check with the states of Washington, Oregon, Nevada and Utah that have used primarily mail in balloting for several of the past voting cycles prior to covid even being a thing...

also note that if you think mail in voting will ever go away, be advised that most states already have mail in contingencies in their voting bylaws, and it’s only going to be a matter of time before those are expanded to full operation...
