Hawaii’s alarm system didn’t warn people of the blaze. Why did it fail?

This week, the system fell short yet again but in a profound way — there was never a warning to the community about the latest wildfires set ablaze on the island of Maui. zp> Most survivors had little warning of the gaining fire until they smelled smoke or saw flames, reported The Associated Press. Dustin Kaleiopu, a resident of the city of Lahaina that’s in ruins, left his home with his grandfather when smoke started coming through the window, reported CBS News.

The fire was started by a Tesla with a battery that went critical

The system did not work because it was bought and operated by the government.

Very good question. They had that fake missile alert a few years back.

Were they “real estate fires” worth billions of dollars to rebuild Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii as another Waikiki?

The writer doesn’t really get to why the system failed and doesn’t document trying to ask folks who might know.

They only rehashed prior failures.

There isn’t any real news here......but that is Yahoo for you.

Well everything else in the world is blamed on climate change, why not blame the failure of this alarm system on climate change too?

I’m sorry for their loss but this is plain and simply a lack of situational awareness. The area is covered in a vegetation, namely an invasive species of grass, that gets very dry after the rainy season, and has a long history of wildfires. Everyone knew this. Then you have the winds from the backside of a hurricane, the probability of which was or should have been forecast by the NWS. Anyone paying attention would have known that any fire at all could be catastrophic and would have been prepared.

I live in tornado country and during the season I watch the NWS Storm Prediction Center every day. I know the risk and keep myself apprised of the situation on an hourly basis if it looks like I’m going to be affected. Situational awareness.

I have a significant history with Hawaiian politicians. As a group they are as incompetent as any group of buttdragging politicos anyplace anywhere. Mayor Frank Fasi, the mayor of Honolulu back in the 60-70’s, was the last non-gummint bred guy to ever be in a position of authority. He was the guy who bought one-way tickets to the west coast for drifters, beach bums, homeless, etc. types.

Once , in the late 70’s I slugged a desk in city hall after getting the wrong answer, 3 times, to a building permit question. I got an instant meeting with the entire top floor of city hall and had the problem fixed before the meeting was over. They respond to fear. As a registered engineer, with knuckles, they realized they had to listen to me whether they wanted, or not.
