A Utah man who assaulted a man and his son at their family tire shop in 2018 shouting he hated Mexicans was sentenced to 20 years in prison Tuesday.
Alan Dale Covington, 55, was convicted by a Salt Lake City jury in February 2020 of the hate crime of assaulting three men, members of the Lopez family who ran a local tire shop, because he believed they were Mexican, according to the Justice Department. His prison term will be followed by five years of supervised release.

Better reporting is needed. It wasn’t just assault, but grievous bodily harm. 20 years seesm a bit harsh by comparison with other things, but I won’t shed tears.
20 years for name calling? Biden did this. People have been driven into a state of rage because they see millions of illegals pouring over the border and bringing the country to its knees.

Now if we could only hold the FBI to the same standard for its ordered hits.
....given the feds miserable track record on disparate punishments, up to and including no bail in some heinous murder cases followed by probation and no jail time, I think Covington’s punishment was too high and reflects/suggests a typical LIBERAL bias and sucking up to the Hispanic voters.
I do agree with serious prison time for him but 20 years is too much, all relevant things considered. On appeal, I would support his sentence being cut to 10 years + 5 years probation.

Utah is a Constitutional carry state. The situation, IMO, is something that needed to be handled on site. Someone who decides to initiate the sort of action requiring the installation of a metal plate in my or a loved one’s head deserves immediate justice, whether they are delusional or not.

However, if he had done the exact same thing, but the victims were White, would he have been charged with a hate crime?
