The estate of a donor to Middlebury College can sue to stop the de-naming of a chapel funded with his bequest, a Vermont judge ruled recently.
Judge Robert Mello greenlighted the lawsuit on behalf of Governor John Mead’s estate. The estate, represented by former Vermont Governor James Douglas (pictured, left), argued that the school has a contractual obligation to keep “Mead” on the name of its memorial chapel, in the face of cancellation calls over Gov. Mead’s (pictured, right) alleged support for eugenics.
The school removed Mead’s name in 2021.
Judge Mello ruled that there was enough evidence to suggest a perpetual naming rights contract had been created.

Middelbury is a liberal college. Eugenics is a liberal policy.
Charles P. Scott Center for Spiritual and Religious Life
Uh huh.
Former university president Paul Moody also chaired a committee on the “racial stock of Vermont,” as reported by the legal blog. “Meanwhile, as the litigation grinds on through the summer, one thing is clear: Middlebury College taught more about eugenics than Mead would ever know,” Jane Coleman wrote on June 15.
(Governor John Mead (1841-1920) was a Republican, so of course he is okay to cancel. The faculty of Middlebury College who actually taught eugenics courses? Meh.)
Eugenicist John Mead bad, eugenics Margaret Sanger good.
(Governor Mead was an MD, BTW.)

Support for studying “the use of a new operation called a vasectomy” = Bad
Lop off the genitals of confused children = Good.
The article does not say when Mead made gift, or how much it was. Perhaps Middlebury College should offer to pay that money back, with interest. Oh, and factor in the effects of inflation, too.
Just for fun, I did a quick (and rough) calculation. I assumed a 5% interest rate and an inflation rate of 2.5%. If the gift was $50,000 and was made in 1915, Middlebury College would owe the Mead estate $123,000,000 today.
What say you, Middlebury College?
Right. When is Princeton going to get rid of anything with Woodrow Wilson’s name on it, including that stupid black and white statue? He was a eugenics supporter and flat out racist.
I enjoy art. And there were some nice works there. But as I looked at many of the works they displayed, and read the placards next to the work, I felt as if I were being sprayed with a fire hose of Leftism word-salad. Things largely read like this:
Mary Smith (1965-) was a pioneer in the portrayal of the bigotry, hate, challenges and hardships faced by both cis-gender and gender non-conforming people born with female anatomy. Her works highlight the fight against the capitalistic ruling class...
And so on (I just made that up, but it is representative)
My wife laughed, she said she saw the young woman who admitted us watching me on the surveillance cameras and shaking her head.
One of my faults (features) is that I most definitely do not have a poker face. I have no doubt that young college age woman watching me reading this could clearly see my military hat, my eyes narrowing, the shaking of my head in disbelief at the stupidity...
Yeah. It is the belly of the beast, no doubt, at Middlebury College.
I agree, though I won’t go into why. :-)
B’woke
Heh...very good!
eugenicist Saint Margaret Sanger High Priestess of Baal.
Pardon my correction.
A “Republican” in the early 20th century was a leftist. The only difference was that the federal government still had very limited powers up until the 1930s.
