Ohio Issue 1 fails: Big cities, suburban and many rural counties voted down issue
Columbus Dispatch ^ | August 8, 2023 | Haley BeMiller

Issue 1 was projected to fail on Tuesday, according to Decision Desk HQ, dealing a blow to Ohio Republicans who wanted to hamstring a November ballot question on abortion rights.

Decision Desk HQ, an election results reporting agency providing results and race calls for the USA TODAY Network Ohio, called the race around 8:09 p.m. With about 28% of the vote counted, no vote was leading 68% to 32%.

Tuesday’s election was the culmination of a months-long fight that began last year, when Secretary of State Frank LaRose and Rep. Brian Stewart, R-Ashville, first introduced a plan to tighten the rules for constitutional amendments. The debate played out in the halls of the Ohio Statehouse, on the campaign trail and even in the courtroom as opponents tried to stop GOP lawmakers in their tracks.

Proponents of the measure said they want to keep controversial policies out of the constitution and reserve it for the state's fundamental rights and values. Critics argued the ballot measure was a power grab that would hamstring the rights of citizens to place an issue on the ballot.

Ohioans appeared to buy the message opponents were selling.

Why is everyone acting like this was the abortion vote, this was to make it require 60% to change the state constitution instead of 50 plus one vote. It should have passed easily. A common sense Republican initiative in a red state. I’m seeing a lot of excuses that don’t add up to me. I talked to someone in Ohio yesterday and they thought it was a very likely pass. The left wanted this to go down in the worst way and those f’n machines are what are used. Is that what caused this?

There certainly is “grave consequences” for continuing to vote for rino trash, lol. Just a slightly slower pace to totalitarianism.

That may change. It is up to the States to make these decisions.

But it’s been that way for 110 years. And all of a sudden everyone’s hair is on fire about it?

Whoever you were talking to in Ohio didn’t know what they were talking about. And Blaming everything on the machines is ridiculous.

Abortion is not in the Constitutuon, and is up to the States

And I’m talking about our STATE Constitution. And abortion will likely soon be protected in it. All any pet cause needs is a simple majority and our State constitution gets a rewrite. This is the very definition of a state defining what “rights” it wants to protect.

It should have never been this way. This was an opportunity to change that. I would have supported this issue regardless of who was trying to ram through a pet issue. I believe all constitutions should be hard to change. They set forth a framework of rights that should be protected from the whims of the mob.

“A common sense Republican initiative in a red state”

Laughing my ass off at that one. The governor Mike Dewine wants his own visa system in this state, f’n please. Go pull that handle for a rino, lol.

Best to leave Abortion up to the voters. If we lose elections there will be abortion clinics on every corner. It’s hard to take away rights once they have been granted. Majority of Americans are for first trimester abortions and exceptions for life of the mother in the late terms.

In a political organization I belong to, when there is a controversial state or local issue, we poll our our membership because it is the club’s position and in its by-laws to not officially endorse in primaries or take a position in local issues. However we publish the polls of our membership. This may sound spineless but this has served the organization well for 50 years.

Actually I am not. It lost too badly and across the board to blame the machines. I’m just trying to figure it out because this thing should have passed

One of the flaws was that the way the question was crafted had many people confused. In the midst of an advertising storm urging No on One, and people being aware that this was precipitated by the abortion fight, they didn’t know which way to vote. I know well educated adults who didn’t get it, thought that voting Yes meant they were voting in favor of the abortion bill that will be on the ballot in November. In addition, the prolife side was outspent by about 5 to 1, mostly with out of state abortion money.

Said this would go down but it went down even harder than I thought! Lol!

You gotta love Republicans. They’ve DREAMED about and campaigned and fund raised on overturning Roe v. Wade for literally a half century, it finally happens and they have NO PLAN!!

How can you say Brown will be unseated when in the next breath you say conservatives/republicans sat back and let the left define the terms. The pro 1 forces advertised the extremism failure would cause, yet it was defeated. Would the same hold true for Brown? If LaRose is the ultimate candidate for the Republican Party in 2024, it will be easy to tag him with this issue and how he handled it for the pro choice folks.
