Trump's defense in 2020 election case could conjure ghost of Nixon once more

The multiple criminal charges against former President Donald Trump are often described as unprecedented, and so they are. But Trump is not the first president to be named in a criminal indictment.

That distinction, such as it is, belongs to Richard Nixon, the 37th president of the United States, still in office in March 1974 when a specially appointed prosecutor named Leon Jaworski indicted Nixon aides and advisers for their roles in the Watergate scandal. They were all the president's men, but Nixon himself was named as an "unindicted co-conspirator."

That phrase was back in the news this week when Trump's latest indictment also identified (but did not name) six unindicted co-conspirators. Some of those individuals might still be charged in the ongoing prosecution, which alleges Trump led a multi-faceted effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election that he lost.

These people are soiling themselves (and as Dan Bongino might say, spreading it all over their faces) by bringing up Richard Nixon.

What Nixon did was NOTHING, not even in the same universe as what we have seen, Biden, his Adminstration, and the rest of his allies on the Left have done.

And Nixon loved his country. These execrable scumbags today certainly do not.

The only relevance is, should Trump be convicted of anything, the President should pardon him. Indeed, if Trump were “out of the game,” the President should pardon him forthwith. We should act like we’re a great country. Trump isn’t accused of anything really bad. It’s not like he killed anybody or stole anything. He’s not a danger to society. Per the accusation, he overstepped the boundaries of what he, as President, could do. (O.K., I admit, I don’t believe in the theory of the crime.) Plus, nothing came of it. The Vice President counted the damn electoral votes. Joe Biden got sworn it. Gerald Ford took a lot of heat for pardoning Nixon, but he did the right thing. Let the man retire from politics. Back to Trump now. The analogy isn’t complete, because Trump is still in the game. He’s way ahead in the Republican primary polls, and has a slight edge in the general election polls. What are the Democrats going to do next, go after Trump’s family? I hope every candidate for the Republican nomination will indicate that, if elected, they’ll issue pardons to Trump and his family, consider pardons and commutations for everybody caught up in this mess, and address the fact that federal law enforcement has become political.
