San Francisco Archdiocese says bankruptcy 'very likely' given child sex abuse lawsuits
LA Times via Yahoo ^ | 08/05/2023 | Kevin Rector

The Archdiocese of San Francisco will "very likely" file for bankruptcy in order to deal with a wave of lawsuits alleging child sexual abuse by its priests and other employees and volunteers going back decades, the archbishop said.

In an open letter Friday, Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone said the option was the result of "much contemplation and prayer" and arose from discussions with lawyers and financial advisors.

More than 500 civil lawsuits alleging abuse were filed against the Catholic archdiocese between 2020 and 2022, when California temporarily lifted the statute of limitations on such allegations against churches and other institutions.

Cordileone said filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy would allow the archdiocese "to deal with the hundreds of cases collectively rather than one at a time" and "reorganize its financial affairs to continue its vital ministries to the faithful and to the communities that rely on our services and charity."

The archdiocese would not be the first in California to take such action. Bankruptcy has been filed or mulled by dioceses across the state, including in Oakland, Santa Rosa, Sacramento and San Diego.

The change to California's law spurred thousands of lawsuits over alleged abuses dating as far back as the 1940s, against churches, religious groups, private and public schools, sports groups and nonprofit organizations.

In May, Los Angeles County officials predicted having to spend between $1.6 billion and $3 billion to resolve about 3,000 allegations of sexual abuse at its foster homes, children shelters, and probation camps and halls.

I’m confused, are the Libs for or against or both at the same time in favor of abusing children sexually?

They’re for it unless religious groups do it. The Libs hate God and anyone who believes in Him.

Not surprising. Had they been upfront many years ago and turned these freaks over vice hiding them and then actually vetted people they wouldn’t have this problem. They created it.

A wood chipper would be better than bankruptcy.

This could have been avoided by turning pedo-priest over to the law for prosecution, unless the RCC is so infiltrated by pedos that it is endemic.

Just an observation:

Some years ago a MARTA (the Atlanta transit system) bus was in an accident on Peachtree Street. It was on its way to the garage and was not in service.

Within two weeks, MARTA had received over 25 personal injury claims from people who asserted that they were on the bus.

Now - imagine that the accident occurred back in 1940. No witnesses, driver probably deceased, records probably destroyed. Further imagine that the claimants allege that the driver was drunk, threatened them, or assaulted them. Lots of salacious and inflammatory detail.

Statutes of limitation exist for a reason. That's why California repealed the statute.

Exactly, the Catholic Church created their own problem by not taking the right and moral approach. It is a sad day when the moral foundation of society abdicates their sacred duties and sides with evil.

--- "San Francisco Archdiocese says bankruptcy 'very likely' given child sex abuse lawsuits"

Given this is such a craze now, I look forward to the trial lawyers figuring out that the deepest pockets AND the greatest number of child-grooming perverts are in the public schools system, nationwide.

Time to harvest them, should the clever trial lawyers trig onto this.

Catholic dioceses? Small potatoes compared to the many public school systems.

What happens when an archdiocese goes bankrupt? Do the church buildings get sold off? Or do those belong to the papacy not the archdiocese? Has it ever happened? What exactly would happen?

The whole law is aimed at conservative organizations like Church and Boy Scouts.
First, these allegations are so old, there are difficult to prove or disprove. Since accused are innocent until proven guilty, most of them should be thrown out.
Also, in general, why to sue organization for misbehavior of some member. Should we sue communist party for the murder of the judge? Why is the Church responsible for misbehavior of some priests?

What percent of the victims were boys and what percent were girls. Or is that a question that must not b asked?

What percent of the victims were boys and what percent were girls.

The John Jay Report (2004) identified 81% of victims as male.
