When Ron DeSantis got into a car crash last week, many couldn’t help seeing a morbid irony. The governor’s botched campaign launch set the tone for a spectacular fall from grace. DeSantis was supposed to be the alternative to Trump, the more “electable,” disciplined version who would rescue the country from Joe Biden.
When a candidate has to “reboot” this early, it’s a sign that it’s over. DeSantis, as they say, just doesn’t have it.>

Unfortunately too many people around here will chose the later option. My position is that the stakes are too high for that.
Agree. In hindsight DeSantis should have waited until 2028.
This country is done whether Trump wins or not. At best, Trump might slow the decline.
Demographics is destiny.
And politics is downstream from culture.
Forget it... It is done, it won’t be Trump. The “faithful” will not vote for a “criminally accused” Trump even if he is the primary winner and no matter how wrongfully accused. They will throw their vote away instead.
To drag us all into the fire while claiming self-righteous morality is selfish immorality and it will be our downfall.
I guess this guy Boose is in on the “conservative” conspiracy to see Trump become the GOP candidate so he can lose in the general. Trump would lose to a 60 IQ transexual Democrat intern if that’s the Dem candidate. Stupid trailer park conservatives worship Trump, buy his idiotic NFT cards and would give him their last EBT card if he asked. So, imagine their shock on November 6, 2024 when ANYBODY who runs against him wins. Like most here on FR, they will never blame themselves for following a false messiah.
I have no problem with you wanting to wait and vote. That's your opinion.
I, and many others think that it's best for the country that we now coalesce around Trump. That's our opinion.
But is that a coronation?
Trump was the best president in my lifetime.
Trump has been investigated, impeached, threatened, lied about nonstop by the dominant media for 8 years and now indicted dozens of times.
The best president, fighting difficult obstacles, that's hardly a coronation.
Trump has indeed shown, and it's not even close, that he is the right man for the job in 2024.
Anyone not rally around Trump is the enemy.
For eight years this has been a battle between the base of the Republican party and Republican establishment and most of its donors. And, the issue is, will we have party that represents conservatives or one that is party of an oligarchy compromised of donors and the establishments of both parties.
There isn't another Republican running, with possible exception of Vivek Ramaswamy (and that is big if considering his position on the TPP), that isn't in align with the Republican establishment and donor class.
No, the primaries are just starting. Still 163 days until the first caucuses and primaries, nearly a year until the convention. At the moment all candidates have ZERO DELEGATES. Not over until it is over. Trump, nor any candidate, has yet to earn the nomination.
The GOPe will not be uniting with Trump, ie, Christy, Asa, Romney, McConnell et Al. Haley, Pence, Scott, Ramy and maybe De Santis will be looking for jobs.
I am not disagreeing with your position. However, there are many Trump Supporters on this board who also threaten to walk away if Trump does not win the nomination.
This hostility of Trump Supporters mirrors the hostility of Trump. Trump has been kinder and nicer to squishes like Graham than he has been to conservatives like DeSantis. Trump loves those who pay him homage.
That will make it very difficult for Trump to win the general election, and to build a strong administration even if he were to win the general election.
Assuming he were to win, will he staff his cabinet with squishes because the conservatives might disagree with his policies?
How many “Republicans” are there anymore?
Ya know for someone who’s been a freeper for as long as me(25 years) you sure use a lot of the catchphrases you hear from left wing trolls on social media. “ignorant trailer park conservatives “? “Messiah”? From my take it sounds like your only concern is winning an election whereas others here see something bigger, something deeper at stake.
>>Unfortunately, they are too loyal to the party and to political power. They are not loyal to the conservative principles that the country needs to embrace.<<
Loyal to the “Party”, as in loyal to the system of graft which benefits party insiders, rather than loyal to the people who vote Republican in usually-vain hope of their lives being improved.
Yep. I feel for my nephews and nieces too.
How many “Republicans” are there anymore?
A lot more than you think. They just need to start flexing their political muscles and stop being keyboard warriors
I think they are more “Anti-Democrats” than pro Republicans.
Are you waiting for Trump to be convicted on Bogus political charges
thinking Ronnie will just “inherit” MAGA voters?
If so, you are very wrong.
Of course, the nomination is not settled until people vote.
However, I think the OP is making an important point:
Some nominations are obvious and others are not, and since there are pros and cons to contesting a nomination, it is useful to acknowledge which type of nomination you are dealing with.
For example, in 2016 there was no obvious Republican heir-apparent, so it made sense to duke it out. They had to fight in order to determine who was the strongest candidate. On the other hand, the nomination of RR in 1984 was a no-brainer. He was a popular incumbent and there was no way anyone else had a chance.
If you have one of these no-brainers, you go through the motions, but there is no upside to having a bloody primary battle - only a downside. I think that’s the situation now for Republicans - a no-brainer.
Trump is obviously going to win, so go through the motions, but there’s no point in other Republicans trying to destroy him. I’m not saying they should drop out - just be mindful of the fact that we are supposed to be on the same side.
If I was a Republican candidate opposing Trump, I would ask myself a couple questions:
1) Do I think I would be better than Trump at putting America first?
2) Do think I have a good chance of beating Trump?
3) If I can’t beat him will me running against him make him a better candidate?
If the answer to any of those is yes, I’d stay in the race - otherwise, I’d drop out.
I have a strong feeling that some of these RINOs opposing him don’t care about MAGA and would rather have the Democrat win - they make me sick.
Christie and Pence are in that group - some people would include Haley and deSantis, but I’m not there yet. They can all stay in the race for all I care, but Trump is going to win, so it would be nice if they would keep that in mind and focus on making him a better candidate rather than helping the Democrats destroy him.
I’m waiting for trump to get the magic number to be officially nominated like it’s been since the beginning. I don’t see how that is controversial.
No. I believe his cheerleaders have those tendencies.
