The Election Where a Democratic President Secretly Wanted the Republican to Win
Time ^ | 08/01/2023 | OLIVIA B. WAXMAN

After Billy Graham, the famous preacher and presidential confidante, passed away in 2018, Luke Nichter was one of the first researchers to get a glimpse at previously unseen Graham diary entries kept at the evangelical Wheaton College.

Nichter’s new book The Year That Broke Politics: Collusion and Chaos in the Presidential Election of 1968, out today, is the first to be based on Graham’s personal diaries. The entries reveal that incumbent Democratic President Lyndon B. Johnson worked behind the scenes that year to help get Republican Richard Nixon elected.

In a phone conversation on July 17, Nichter explained how the Democratic Party became so divided, why Johnson wanted Nixon elected, and how the politics in the 1968 presidential race are similar to the upcoming 2024 presidential election.

Maybe because all of LBJ’s awful policies that were in place would be blamed on Nixon and then the Democrats could regain the presidency?

I dunno about 2024 but it could explain 2016.

The second election Nixon won 49 states. Dems had to create an impeachment out of whole cloth to get rid of him.

It worked so well, that’s been their model many times since then.

It might be something as simple as LBJ being angry because his party deserted him for McCarthy, so he wanted them to suffer the way they made him suffer. However, I would need more evidence than Graham’s diary, as unlikely as Graham was to lie, in order to believe it.

I find it almost impossible to believe the rats would ever take a dive even 40 years ago.

The Marxist Rats had a plan to take over America while strengthening Marxism worldwide.

It required America be defeated and Communists win in Vietnam.

There had to be a Republican President prosecuting the War when the US was defeated to make the Democrats appear competent and patriotic and ensure their recapture of the Presidency and popularity.

The Establishment GOP wanted Biden to win in 20, and Hillary in 20.. they worked actively and covertly to achieve those goals.

They are doing it again in 2024.

This is nothing new...

The establishment is the establishment.

This is not new. An article about how LBJ helped Nixon win came out decades ago when Nixon was still alive.

An old joke my Daddy liked to tell back then: Farmer calls in the TV repairman and tells him that the television set broadcasts nothing but speeches from Hubert H. Humphery. Same thing happens when he changes channels. Nothing but speeches from HHH.

Repairman asks for some time to look around and comes back with this diagnosis: Here's your problem, Mister! Your TV is grounded into the manure pile out back and your antenna is high up on your windmill.

Yeah, some farms still had windmills back then.

Yeah — competence was the concern back then...

Not which folks could be shot or jailed if the rat pol wanted them shot or jailed.

I seem to remember that the first stop Nixon made after his 1968 nomination was to the LBJ Ranch.
