We Need a Limited Military Draft

It's time to change how our country fills the ranks of our military.

Since 1775, our nation has used a combination of volunteers and draftees to meet our national defense personnel needs, especially in times of crisis.

Today, the military needs only about 160,000 youth from an eligible population of 30 million to meet its recruitment needs. But after two decades of war -- both of which ended unsuccessfully -- and low unemployment, many experts believe the all-volunteer force has reached a breaking point. And American confidence in its military is at a low.

When your elected officials label you as extremists, or potential domestic terrorists, I can’t see the appeal in joining the military. They do seem to like to talk about ‘muh vetrins when it comes reelection time, or when there is need to cudgel spineless republicans for not voting for pork filled NDAA’s (our most recent NDAA not included, I’d like to thank several Republican Senators for voting for it).

I did my time, did my individual ready reserve. Won’t go back.

No. We don’t need a draft. If the military can’t draw recruits the military is wrong. If bad wars not fought to win discourage recruits, then the government is wrong. A volunteer military is an excellent bellwether for how much the country actually trusts its government and direction. If it can’t find the bodies then the government needs to get right with the people.

While the all-volunteer force had the effect of lowering discipline problems and professionalizing the force, it also created a vast gap between American citizens and those who serve — effectively creating a military warrior caste that now appears more like a multi-generational family business than an organization that represents the true makeup of our democratic republic.

There are good points there. But they are not all negative, depends on the viewpoint?

They’ve abused everything else, why wouldn’t the draft be next?

if we only need 160,000 out of population of 30 million, why the need for a draft? That’s such as small proportion of the eligible population. Could we increase pay and benefits, to induce more to enlist, if we really need more people in the military?

Do we really need 160,000? How big is the standing military force today? I don’t know, but wonder, how many do we really need for national defense purposes.

I understand we might need more, if we got into wars. But some conflicts in recent decades were “wars of choice”, where we really didn’t have to get involved militarily.

I sure hope and pray that Ukraine doesn’t end up with American forces directly involved. And I hope people aren’t thinking of a new draft to beef up our military, in anticipation of such an action.

Not only do we not need it we aren’t going to have one. Every so often these guys come out of the woodwork. The only reason the public has mostly gone along with these crazy wars since 911 is because of a voluntary military. If little Johnny or Jimmy had been drafted to go into this kray kray the public would have had apoplexy.

No one wants a draft.

The military is too complex these days. Throwing people who donโ€™t want to be there into that mix would be a disaster.

And who are we in an existential war with? Not China. Not Russia.

Are the bugs about to take out Rio De Janiro?

I’m an old lady who has always looked upon basic training as the “finishing school” for young men. A little something is missing from men who haven’t gone through basic training.

Nope.

We need to end Biden’s Ukrainian Money Laundering Scheme right now.

The draft hasnโ€™t been up to 26 since Korea.

There is zero reason to do that today.

“No, we donโ€™t. If we stopped the military from being so woke, weโ€™d have enough volunteers.”

Woke is a rather general term, but overall I agree. Step 1 would be to ask the age-old question that was ALWAYS the guiding principle to decision involving men: “Does the new policy enhance our strength/readiness more than it causes a loss of morale? If yes, you do it, if no, you DO NOT do it.

So, flooding the military with Drag Queens, or even gays? You decide.

If we stopped deploying them worldwide in hundreds of bases, but put an effective number on our southern border to keep the invaders out, we’d have plenty—on a volunteer basis.

As long as you draft the little ladies as wellโ€ฆthat would be cool.

No school exemptions. No deferrals. Your number comes upโ€ฆand you go.

That is the only way a draft would workโ€” but there is no reason for it.

I am retired military and I canโ€™t recommend anyone who has any self respect, dignity, and morality to join the military today.

This is based on two gung-ho former Marines who spent several tours in Afghanistan. Condensing it down, promotions are based on “diversity.” They were the wrong race. The people being promoted were not competent for the positions they were promoted into. As one said, “I don’t mind fighting, but I don’t want to die because the guy giving the commands is an absolute idiot.”

My personal problem with promoting the least good candidate is that eventually they end up running the entire show. Also, along the way you lose the better candidates who see that it’s not the place they want to work as there’s no future for them. This happened any number of times in my civilian working career. It was usually someone related to the boss who got the promotion. That results in hollowing out the department as anyone with something on the ball decamps. You’re left with the people who are not motivated and have no better prospects. Also, incompetent people do not promote competent people. (Corollary, alcoholics promote alcoholics. Drug users promote drug users and sexual deviants promote sexual deviants. At some point an organization thus afflicted must fail.)

The Regime solution is going to be importing from the third world in exchange for citizenship.

Same as the late, decadent Roman Empire. Dependent on mercenaries and barbarian armies.

The upside is they will need to close the border in order to make that incentive work.
