Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen physically fought and detained a suspected shoplifter on Friday evening while with his family at a sporting goods store on the West Side.
BCSO said on Twitter that Allen "found himself facing an unexpected situation" when he spotted three people stuffing merchandise into duffel bags "with the intent to steal" at Dick's Sporting Goods near Cottonwood Mall.
"Two individuals wisely chose to abandon the items and leave the store," BCSO said on Twitter.
Deputies said the third shoplifter hit the sheriff twice before being taken to the ground by Allen. The department shared a photo of Allen — clad in a white tee and basketball shorts — holding the man down.
A duffel bag can be seen in the photo, stuffed with sneakers, socks and other items.
The suspect, 23-year-old Antonio Oros-Serrano, is charged with misdemeanor counts of battery and shoplifting in the incident.
It's unclear if Oros-Serrano knew who he was tussling with. He appears to have a sling on his arm in a booking photo from the Metropolitan Detention Center but no injuries were documented in court records.
Oros-Serrano, who is apparently living on the streets and has been using fentanyl and methamphetamine for years, according to court records, has been arrested more than a dozen times since 2018 on almost all drug-related charges. It is unclear if he has an attorney.
Deputies said the merchandise Oros-Serrano was trying to steal added up to more than $550. He was found to have two warrants for his arrest, one of which was from a February incident.
BCSO said on Twitter that the incident "serves as a powerful message to all of us — that we, as a community, must unite and take our county back from the rampant crime."

He is supposed to be boycotting Dick’s Sporting Goods.
The suspect had prior warrants. gee how shocking.
So what is wrong with that? No one has been taught that theft is wrong in government schools, so why be surprised? And if theft is ok, there is no consequence to your actions as you are let out free. so you really think anything is going to change? HaHaHaHaHaHaHaHa..............
Isaiah 5:20
Woe to those who call evil good
and good evil,
who put darkness for light
and light for darkness,
who put bitter for sweet
and sweet for bitter.
Dick Stack who started Dick’s 75 years ago with a bit of money from his Grandmother on the east side of Binghamton NY is, I’m sure, grateful for this. Dick was a good guy.
Dick’s is for faygs. I ain’t ever entered the one in my town. They don’t sell firearms or bullets.
Dramatic photo....
Three things you don’t want the perp to say now:
“I can’t breathe.
“Don’t use that sleeper hold.”
“It was only Skittles.”
Then clear the streets for demonstrations.
First get rid of traitorous Demonicrats, judges, and DAs who let these criminals out to commit more theft and violence, and then punish law-abiding citizens who stand up to criminals.
My younger son went from Marine Presidential Support Forces (not bad for 19) to the Federal Protective Service and ICE and now does computer coding. The only time he had to use force was when he went to the Walmart across the street from his apartment in his pajamas to get some ice cream. A greeter and security person were attempting to control a shoplifter and he could see someone was going to be hurt in the process. He intervened and put the suspect on the ground in seconds with no harm to anyone. The police were called, and he sat on a curb as they interviewed the other folks. The officers came to him and said, “You must be the ninja?’.
If only crooked politicians could be taken down like this...
He done took down Dindoo Nuffin!
+1
“You must be the ninja?”
It is a miracle I regularly thank God for.
That’s funny right there!
^5 to him.
If Sheriff Allen was a sheriff in California, he’d lose his job if he detained a shoplifter, even if the shoplifter assaulted him as he did in this case.
