Russian military vessel threatens civilian ship, raising blockade concerns and international alarms

A video capturing a disturbing incident in the Black Sea, where a Russian military vessel was seen menacing a civilian ship, was shared by the State Border Guard Service on Telegram on July 28.

“Russian military ships continue to act aggressively and audaciously in the waters of the Black Sea, violating all norms of international maritime law,” the post stated.

The video captures a conversation between the Russian ship and the civilian vessel while the latter was passing a Ukrainian seaport. Initially, the Russians inquire about the nationality of the people onboard, followed by questions about the cargo and the presence of any weaponry.

“I am warning you against approaching Ukrainian ports,” the Russians blustered.

“The transportation of any cargo to Ukraine by sea is considered by the Russian side as a potential transfer of military goods.”

Furthermore, they added that “the country under whose flag the ship is sailing will be considered involved in the conflict in Ukraine.”

Earlier, Natalia Humeniuk, spokesperson for Ukraine’s Operational Command South, revealed that there are signs pointing to Russia’s preparations for establishing a full blockade of the Black Sea. Notably, Russia has been conducting military exercises that include simulations of attacks on civilian vessels.

Damn! You would think that there was a war going on.... /sarc

I thought it was a ‘special military operation’, not a war. Don’t know how international law treats blockades in a time of special military operations.

There does not need to be a very overt action by the Russians.

The party being instructed is not the US, nor Ukraine, nor any other flag carrier on that sea.

It is the insurance companies that might insure that ship. When they stand down, the ships stop.

“Funny that Freedom of Navigation means nothing to a poster who calls himself ‘Mariner.’”

I noticed that, as well.

Yes, your Russian navy is a laughing stock. The Admiral Kutzenov — which belches smoke like an old Pittsburgh steel mill and has to be towed pretty much everywhere it goes — is a good example.

The US signed the agreement, but Congress has not ratified the convention.

Which means the U.S. is not a signatory to the treaty. It’s no more legally binding on Americans than the stupid Paris Accords or whatever they’re calling the most recent “climate change” agreement.

Which means that the US recognizes it, and abides by it, but is not bound by it.

And the U.S. certainly has no business enforcing it … which was the purpose of my original post on this thread.

I, John F. Kennedy, President of the United States of America, acting under and by virtue of the authority conferred upon me by the Constitution and statutes of the United States, in accordance with the aforementioned resolutions of the United States Congress and of the Organ of Consultation of the American Republics, and to defend the security of the United States, do hereby proclaim that the forces under my command are ordered, beginning at 2:00 P.M. Greenwich time October 24, 1962, to interdict, subject to the instructions herein contained, the delivery of offensive weapons and associated material to Cuba.

For the purposes of this proclamation, the following are declared to be prohibited material:

Surface-to-surface missiles; bomber aircraft; bombs; air-to-surface rockets and guided missiles; warheads for any of the above weapons; mechanical or electronic equipment to support or operate the above items; and any other classes of material hereafter designated by the Secretary of Defense for the purpose of effectuating this proclamation.

To enforce this order, the Secretary of Defense shall take appropriate measures to prevent the delivery of prohibited material to Cuba, employing the land, sea and air forces of the United States in cooperation with any forces that may be made available by other American states.

The Secretary of Defense may make such regulations and issue such directives as he deems necessary to ensure the effectiveness of this order, including the designation, within a reasonable distance of Cuba, of prohibited or restricted zones and of prescribed routes.

Any vessel or craft which may be proceeding toward Cuba may be intercepted and may be directed to identify itself, its cargo, equipment, and stores and its ports of call, to stop, to lie to, to submit to visit and search, or to proceed as directed. Any vessel or craft which fails or refuses to respond to or comply with directions shall be subjected to being taken into custody. Any vessel or craft which is believed en route to Cuba and may be carrying prohibited material or may itself constitute such material shall, wherever possible, be directed to proceed to another destination of its own choice and shall be taken Into custody if it fails or refuses to obey such directions. All vessels or craft taken into custody shall be sent into a port of the United States for appropriate disposition.

Could we still effectively mine their 3 harbors from the air? Like we mined Haiphon harbor in North Vietnam? Or do you have to drop them off ships to deploy them? And I mean LOTS of anti ship mines. Thoughts?

Yeah, I guess you could go within the 12 mile limit and drop mines from the air to block the entrances to Russian harbors. I can’t see what could possibly go wrong? Any other bright ideas?

Freedom of Navigation goes back way beyond the "Law of the Sea," to at least the 15th century.

There's also the historical curiosity called the War of 1812.

Look up what caused it.

A couple of days ago, you thought we should give like 150 backpack nukes to the Ukrainians. Now we should mine Russia ports like we mind HaiPhong harbor in Vietnam? Do you really not understand the consequences of such direct attacks by America on Russia?

“And the U.S. certainly has no business enforcing it … which was the purpose of my original post on this thread.”

And yet, Russia — a signatory to the convention — has taken it upon itself to interdict ALL shipping in the Black Sea, thus negating the Black Sea as international waters, in clear violation of the convention.

What, besides offering banal, childish commentary have YOU don’t for your country?

I've done plenty over the years, including saving lives.

Meanwhile, we interdict Iranian ships on the high seas and seize their cargoes. We did a blockade on Cuba. The British conducted a blockade on Germany during World War I and would not allow our shipping in the area under threat of sinking even though we were a neutral country.
We enter DICT and seize ships and cargoes headed from Iran to Yemen.

And now comically, everyone is filled with this righteous indignation when Russia stops Ukraine from accessing the sea. Lol

And that’s really fine by me...I’d vote for Ramaswamy too if he’s the candidate. Or Scott, or Haley, whoever else wins the nomination.
