Russian military vessel threatens civilian ship, raising blockade concerns and international alarms

A video capturing a disturbing incident in the Black Sea, where a Russian military vessel was seen menacing a civilian ship, was shared by the State Border Guard Service on Telegram on July 28.

“Russian military ships continue to act aggressively and audaciously in the waters of the Black Sea, violating all norms of international maritime law,” the post stated.

The video captures a conversation between the Russian ship and the civilian vessel while the latter was passing a Ukrainian seaport. Initially, the Russians inquire about the nationality of the people onboard, followed by questions about the cargo and the presence of any weaponry.

“I am warning you against approaching Ukrainian ports,” the Russians blustered.

“The transportation of any cargo to Ukraine by sea is considered by the Russian side as a potential transfer of military goods.”

Furthermore, they added that “the country under whose flag the ship is sailing will be considered involved in the conflict in Ukraine.”

Earlier, Natalia Humeniuk, spokesperson for Ukraine’s Operational Command South, revealed that there are signs pointing to Russia’s preparations for establishing a full blockade of the Black Sea. Notably, Russia has been conducting military exercises that include simulations of attacks on civilian vessels.

Doing what they said they would do.

There's not a lot anyone can do about it in the Black Sea absent engaging existential war with Russia.

So far only Ukraine has signed up for that.

Damn! You would think that there was a war going on.... /sarc

Only an idiot or someone being paid to take the risk sails a civilian ship into a war zone.

That was my first impression as well. There is a war going on. If I were on a merchant ship going to either Ukraine or Russia in this environment, I sure as hell would make sure my insurance policy was paid up, and my life vest is in working order.

Maybe it's time to blockade Russian ports.

All 3 of them.

With what? Have you familiarized yourself with Biden’s Navy? The days of a Trump era strong, respected military are gone, we are now a laughing stock.

“Freedom of navigation” shouldn’t mean anything to Americans in this context. The U.S. is one of the few countries in the world that isn’t a signatory to the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea.

“Funny that Freedom of Navigation means nothing to a poster who calls himself ‘Mariner.’”

I have been aboard warships exercising “freedom of navigation” in hostile waters. I was on a warship that was fired upon. That’s in addition to all the “end of the world” billets I filled with TACAMO and DCA.

What, besides offering banal, childish commentary have YOU don’t for your country?

“Neptune, Harpoon, UAV etc. Ask the Moskva.”

They got nuthin’ to reach 100 miles at sea.

And they got nuthin’ to detect or attack a Kilo class sub.

Eff the United States of Banana.

Evo Morales plane incident

Spain, France, and Italy denied Bolivian president Evo Morales permission to cross their airspace. Morales's plane landed in Austria.

On July 1, 2013, president Evo Morales of Bolivia, who had been attending a conference in Russia, suggested during an interview with RT (formerly Russia Today) that he would consider a request by Edward Snowden for asylum. The following day, Morales's plane, en route to La Paz, was rerouted to Austria and landed there, after France, Spain, and Italy denied access to their airspace. While the plane was parked in Vienna, the Spanish ambassador to Austria arrived with two embassy personnel and asked to search the plane but they were denied permission by Morales himself.

U.S. officials had raised suspicions that Snowden may have been on board. Morales blamed the U.S. for putting pressure on European countries and said that the grounding of his plane was a violation of international law.

In April 2015, Bolivia's ambassador to Russia, María Luisa Ramos Urzagaste, accused Julian Assange of inadvertently putting Morales's life at risk by intentionally providing to the U.S. false rumors that Snowden was on Morales's plane. Assange responded that "we weren't expecting this outcome. The result was caused by the United States' intervention. We can only regret what happened."
