'Oppenheimer' leaves out the most terrifying, deadly risk of nuclear weapons because nobody knew about it until the 1980s

The film "Oppenheimer" is filled with terrible visions of nuclear war from the father of the atom bomb. But J. Robert Oppenheimer didn't know about the worst-case scenario: nuclear winter. The theory is that nuclear war would darken the skies, cool the planet, and cause billions to starve. Christopher Nolan's new film "Oppenheimer" is filled with the titular physicist's worst nightmares of nuclear war.

Ominous visions of mushroom clouds bursting from city after city, stacks of fire rising past the clouds, and ripples of radiation engulfing Europe haunt Cillian Murphy's J. Robert Oppenheimer.

As the director of the secret Los Alamos laboratory, where a group of scientists developed and tested the world's first atom bomb, Oppenheimer was well aware of the power his lab was unleashing.

He famously called it "Death, the destroyer of worlds."

But he only knew half the story.

A good read for Pedo Joe and all the other fools who want to continue poking the bear.

Morgan could at least get the quote right. “Now, I am become death, destroyer of worlds.”

I believe at the time they were more worried about setting the atmosphere on fire versus a nuclear winter.

Nuclear winter is a pseudo-scientific myth; as is atmospheric CO2 causing severe global warming.

“A good read for Pedo Joe and all the other fools who want to continue poking the bear.”

Not really. Joe wants to block the sun, anyway, to save the planet from Global Warming. Please don’t let him get the idea that nukes could save the planet from Russia! Russia, Russia! too.

The release of Oppenheimer is to reacquaint a largely ignorant population with nuclear war, to prepare them for what will happen next year when our own CIA will release nukes in Ukraine and make it look like Putin did it.

I believe at the time they were more worried about setting the atmosphere on fire versus a nuclear winter.

They actually calculated the possibility that this could happen by looking at the possible nuclear reactions that could occur in nitrogen, oxygen, and between those two atoms.

The calculations were done in 1942 by Hans Bethe and Emil Konopinski. Edward Teller was already thinking about making a hydrogen bomb (the "Super") and asked if the possibility could be explored.

The difference between Pedo Joe and Oppenheimer and many others is:
Pedo Joe and his ilk want to win an election.
Oppenheimer, Truman and the others wanted win and end a terrible war.

Nuclear winter is bull, and always was bull. There may be a short-term cooling effect for months to a year after a full release of nuclear weapons on multiple continents, but the earth won’t freeze into a ball of ice like Carl Sagan the communist was screaming about.

There’s an 80’s Movie ‘Threads’ that is about nuclear winter. It’s slow, but recommend it.

Doubtful since “our” CIA desperately wants to partner with Putin to remove President Trump’s excellent Iran policy. The original Obama Iran nuke deal was a cornerstone of Obama’s Iran loving presidency and Dems are still apoplectic that Trump killed it.

This is probably correct; perhaps younger people who did not grow up during the Cold War with the threat of instant annihilation need a refresher.

That being said, I know a Democrat who watches lots of CNN. She said it would be a good thing if we bombed Russia because they are bad people.

When I said we live smack in the middle of a nuclear strike zone and that we would become an instant plasma she asked “What’s a plasma?”
