Another piece of charter school legislation was vetoed by Gov. Roy Cooper late Friday afternoon.
The bill would have lessened the caps on enrollment growth. The Charter School Omnibus bill, as it is known, would also allow county commissioners to give property tax proceeds for capital projects.
Cooper, a second-term Democrat, previously vetoed the Charter School Review Board legislation.
The latest veto by Cooper is his 89th since taking office in January 2017 and 14th this session. Eight of those have already been reversed by successful override challenges, and more are expected.
Cooper’s statement on the veto, in full, said, “This bill allowing more students to attend failing charter schools risks their education and their future. The State Board of Education should continue to oversee the enrollment growth of charter schools to assure success. North Carolina should continue to cap the enrollment growth of low-performing charter schools until they can show that they improve student achievement. Finally, diverting local resources to build charter schools without clear authority on who owns them risks financial loss to county taxpayers who have no recourse.”
He will not be missed when his term expires.
BS, Royboy.
C’mon legislature...override this one too!
OK, now do what the legislature has been doing with refreshing frequency lately.
Shove it right down Cooper’s throat. Use your supermajority and override his veto. Again. Make him eat it.
Its so satisfying watching them do this to him.
Herr Cooper like so many other leaders have gotten a pass on their COVID tyranny and continue this tactic. Gotta have all the kids staring at a gyrating tranny in first grade.
If only the guv had the same concerns about the failing public schools, then my give-a-darn might spark to life.
Thankfully my son and his wife chose to home school the grand kids. Their kindergarten daughter is already at the third grade level.
EC
Roy Cooper has been a disaster for this state.
He’s getting help at the county level. Check out Dr. Taylor, the new School Superintendent for Wake County. Got fired in Mississippi for his CRT and wokeness, but we hired him here.
Raleigh, Greensboro, Asheville, Wilmington and Charlotte love him.
Cooper has vetoed more bills than all the other NC governors in history put together.
What a disaster.
In Wake County (Raleigh) in there's ZERO concern for the needs of ordinary citizens. Local government is entirely controlled by woke race grifters.
Based on my experience in South Carolina, charter schools have their own set of problems. Still it will be satisfying to see Cooper’s veto overridden.
Certainly a disaster during COVID...
Don’t forget Chapel Hill and Durham.
Don’t forget Chapel Hill and Durham.
This too will be overturned.
I actually get more satisfaction out of seeing his Veto’s overturned, than if he’d got on-board and passed the bill.
Cooper was elected for his support to the Alphabet Community. He was reelected for the same reason. He is an ineffective governor who would have loved to behave like the gestapo Witch of Michigan but he was never popular enough to get control of the State Houses.
The NC GOP needs to pass every thing that is considered controversial now, override Cooper's veto's and get this stuff off the table. Next election the RAT candidate will run a negative campaign, promising to reverse everything done this last session, give more parental rights to the teacher's unions and mutilating five year old's. The GOP candidate (probably Robinson) can run a positive forward looking campaign, growing the State economy, more jobs and bringing our communities together.
Wake and Meklenburg would love to see NC become like Illinois or Minnesota. They believe we need to be a train wreck so they can change the direction of the tracks. Asheville is a one issue City, it is all about the rights of the Alphabet Community. Wilmington is an area that I believe Robinson can win. He will win in Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Jacksonville, Fayetteville and even in Rocky Mount.
MAGA voters need to focus as much on their States as they do Trump. NC is an example of what happens when conservatives get control of a State and two of its three branches of Government. States are the platform to fight back against the Feds dictatorial three letter agencies. If they take Trump out the Fed elections will go to the RATS, if that happens get control of your States.
I actually think NC is trending more MAGA than Democrat. I know a bunch of former New Yorkers a few from Vermont etc and almost all of them are leftugees.
That’s awesome to see given how all the snowbirds we used to get from the Northeast were Leftists who were trying to infect us with their mind virus. The script seems to have flipped now.
