Trump trial to begin in May 2024

CNN reports that a federal judge ordered Friday that the trial in the classified documents case that special counsel Jack Smith brought against former President Donald Trump begin in mid-May 2024. US District Judge Aileen Cannon said a two-week trial period would begin on May 20.

The trial is exxpected to take place during multiple Republican primaries. Trump's legal team had earlier petitioned for the trial to be postponed for that reason, but Judge Cannon stated that she did not see that alone as basis to refrain from scheduling a trial date.

Smith's team, in contrast, had called to start the trial in December of 2023, and the proposed trial date will leave the proceedings unfolding far later and slower than originally hoped for by the prosecution.

As shallow as the evidence supposedly ends, Trump should have demanded a speedy trial.

The primaries are pretty much over by then. Based on the polls, trump should have the nomination sewed up by then.

I worry about Judge Cannon’s decisions. Why hasn’t she already dismissed this bogus case?

Has a motion for dismissal even been filed?

I would be shocked if this trial started anywhere near May 2024.

This is something that he can take to the SC.

Do you think that she pushed it out as far as she thought she could get away with hoping Trump would take it to the USSC?

I wonder. It was always going to go the the SC. We will find out if the SC really does give damn about the U.S. Constition. If they don’t, we don’t have a country any longer and they can all go to hell.

If they don’t, we don’t have a country any longer

You are falsely assuming that we have a country today! Without fair elections there is no country! Without fairly administered justice there is no country! Without a free press there is no country! Without a fair immigration system there is no country!

I don’t think she ever mentioned the possibility of dismissal.

She came to fame by placing obstacles to the DOJ examining the materials seized at Mar-a-Lago.

Why would it be delayed?

President Trump’s team wanted it pushed out indefinitely. If Judge Cannon agreed with that motion she could have set a trial date two years out.

The Supreme Court won’t necessarily find a judgement to be subject to review, despite the high-profile defendant.

We’ll just have to see if this case gets that far.
