Terrible news. Decision was purely partisan, All Democrats voted for no cash bail while Republicans opposed it.

Illinois is lost.

That means either nobody gets bail or Illinois is set for destruction.

The purpose is to allow citizens to live under constant terror.

Then they will give politicians more power out of their desperation.

This same tactic has been used over and over again, just in other countries.

NYS beat them by years. Now they’re trying to figure out how to reverse it without looking too stupid.

Instead of traditional bail, perhaps bail offense insurance could be required.

This insurance would cover up to say $10,000 minimum the costs of offenses during release and a $10,000 recapture reward.

The legal necessity of such insurance would take effect if at least three companies are licensed to offer it.

If say an accused shoplifter was arrested and was released after supplying insurance, any store owner robbed by the covered person could claim on the insurance.

Catastrophic decision for law abiding citizens in Illinois who do not have armed guards like the Governor and big city mayors.

If they get rid of cash bail, I hope that means the accused people will pay for bail with check, credit card, or debit card. However, it probably means a lot of violent criminals will go home without paying anything.

How does that work? If you are planning to enter on a life of crime, you go buy insurance against your crimes?

It is perfectly rational to those trying to get power. Put the people on the edge of a cliff and only offer to save them if they give you power.

It isnt rational for those voting for their deaths, however.

AMENDMENT 8
Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.

So, some bail is expected by the constitution.

I’m a bit confused (nothing new there). The article says Illinois is eliminating “cash bail”. Why didn’t they just say Illinois is eliminating bail, period?

Are there other forms of bail still in force? Maybe putting up some form of collateral?
Your home? Your drug stash? The gun you used in your last robbery?
