Bay Area drivers may soon get automatic tickets for going 11 mph over speed limit

Drivers may soon get speeding tickets without ever talking to an officer, if a bill gets approved authorizing speed limit cameras.

The program would give speeding drivers a ticket by using speed cameras and an automatic billing system, according to Assembly Bill 645. "The speed safety system shall capture images of the rear license plate of vehicles that are traveling 11 miles per hour or more over the posted speed limit and notices of violation shall only be issued to vehicles based on that evidence," the bill states. Fines would start at $50 for going 11 mph over the posted speed limit and increase from there.

The new pilot speed camera program would be implemented as soon as January 2024 in several major cities, including San Jose, Oakland, Glendale, Los Angeles, Long Beach and the city and county of San Francisco. The bill was introduced by Assemblymember Laura Friedman of Glendale, according to the bill text.

The pilot program would be in place for five years, until January 2032, and will be reassessed for the entire state if it’s successful, Kerri West, a spokesperson for Friedman’s office, told the Sacramento Bee.

The bill would require cities and counties participating in the program to send drivers warnings, rather than tickets, for the first 60 days of the program, according to the bill text. It would also require these cities to make records confidential, and specify that the speeding violation is subject to civil penalties, among other requirements.

Well some will ignore it until they go reregister their car and have a thousand dollar bill for unpaid tickets to pay before renewing your registration. Happens in Florida with toll violations.

Up until then in the article, it made it seem like these cameras would be set up everywhere in the state. Great journalism by the left, once again.

Because the camel will never stick its whole head into the tent, eh?

The Constitution gives citizen defendants the right to face their accusers in courts of law. If there is no accuser then there can be no trial.

“6th amendment”

United States v. Bench, 82 M.J. 388 (the Confrontation Clause of the Sixth Amendment requires that in all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to be confronted by the witnesses against him).

How do you cross examine a digital camera?

This looks like another Orwellian move“

That’s because it is. It’s unconstitutional too.

I grew up in and learned how to drive in southern California.

Where else can you get a Black Belt in driving?

This move screams "we are desperate for money." This has nothing to do with safety and everything to do with revenue. Having a city filled with dirtheads and street bums does not bring in tax dollars.

Well, Maryland has been doing this for MANY years. They even have portable ones that can be frequently moved to different locations so THE DEPLORABLES don’t always know when they will pop up in a given location.

I saw one of the Maryland mobile speed cams yesterday. The retard operator was walking around it wearing a helmet, ear protection,
Safety glasses and a face mask.

Too retarded for a real job.

this camera shite in colorado is run by private companies that share part of the revenue with the local municipalities ...

... many years ago, the state legislature set rules on their use:

1. it’s a civil issue, not criminal; no points, no LEO enforcement ...

2. the PERSON driving receives the civil summons, not the car ... thus, the PERSON driving MUST be identified ... they don’t even bother to mail a summons if there’s an obvious mismatch with information about the car’s registered owner and the photo ... therefore, wear a cap, sunglasses and even a mask in a city with cameras ...

3. they have 90 days to effect a successful summons ... so, just throw away all the summons letters, and if they bother with attempting personal service, just be wary of answering the door and/or have a family member do it and refuse to accept any paperwork ... they’ll usually give up after that because they have to hire off-duty cops to issue personal service and that’s expensive ...

Everywhere else in the country they are getting rid of automated things like traffic cameras and whatnot. Not in the totalitarian state of Californication.

“Arent there due process and other legal issues with this? I have been under the impression that speed camera tickets were not enforceable and rely on the person sent the ticket to be gullible enough to pay up rather than just ignore it.”

that’s true in colorado based on state law that governs their use ...

This all on its own will drive people out of CA.
No one drives the speed limit in CA.

>p>I'm torn. This looks like another Orwellian move by the autocrats here in California but we do have too many knuckleheads zooming around here and causing havoc

Trading freedom for security - speed limit cameras reasoning same as gun control logic, but cameras won't stop knuckleheads from zooming. Critical thinking is not a crime, yet.

“Where else can you get a Black Belt in driving?”
Since I used to shock people in Seattle, so I guess no where else.
I drove Seattle traffic for over twenty years.
I also had family in Portland. and San Francisco.

https://thelistwire.usatoday.com/lists/the-10-worst-traffic-cities-in-the-united-states/
Black belt is right.
But I will say Los Angeles is the fastest heavy traffic.
eg on a city street when the light goes green everybody starts to move, they don’t wait till the guy in front of them starts to move before they start to go.
