Typo sends millions of US military emails to Russian ally Mali

Millions of US military emails have been mistakenly sent to Mali, a Russian ally, because of a minor typing error.

Emails intended for the US military's ".mil" domain have, for years, been sent to the west African country which ends with the ".ml" suffix.

Some of the emails reportedly contained sensitive information such as passwords, medical records and the itineraries of top officers.

According to the Financial Times, which first reported the story, Dutch internet entrepreneur Johannes Zuurbier identified the problem more than 10 years ago.

Since 2013, he has had a contract to manage Mali's country domain and, in recent months, has reportedly collected tens of thousands of misdirected emails.

...According to the newspaper, they included medical data, maps of US military facilities, financial records and the planning documents for official trips as well as some diplomatic messages.

But Steven Stransky, a lawyer who previously served as senior counsel to the Department of Homeland Security's Intelligence Law Division, said that even seemingly harmless information could prove useful to US adversaries, particularly if it included details of individual personnel.

"Those sorts of communications would mean that a foreign actor can start building dossiers on our own military personnel, for espionage purposes, or could try to get them to disclose information in exchange for financial benefit," Mr Stransky said. "It's certainly information that a foreign government can use."

I doubt this was an accident. They can set up mail security to prevent this kind of thing from happening. More than one way to block this from occurring.

What this military needs is some more diversity and transgenders so we can . . . feel better about these oft recurring screwups.

I can relate.

My great grandfather Ebenezer Right was a navy procurement officer. And during the Indian Wars he accidentally sent an ironclad to Sitting Bull. Mistakes happen. Fortunately for Ebenezer, Sitting Bull had no navy. So the item sat unused.

This is on par with Hillary Clinton mentioning the actual name of an undercover agent in Iran’s nuclear program on her home email server. What possible reason could she have. She could have referenced him in a dozen ways without using his actual name. My theory is her server was a way to get information to agents who were paying her for it.

The guy was executed. While Comey forgave it as extremely reckless nothing happened to her. She and any Democrat would barbecue children and eat them on TV and nothing would be done about it. Oh, she also sold US uranium to another donor.

Why can't they all have the diligence of one Air Force mailroom employee I dealt with. I worked for a contractor running an Air Force office. As the co-op, I ran the contact database, labelled our office newsletter and carried them to the mailroom. The employee in question pulled out all the mail going to Hawaii since her office could not handle overseas mail and Hawaii was clearly over the sea.

My boss laughed his ass off and told me to take the Hawaii mail back in a couple days when she wasn't there. At least she didn't pull out New Mexico too.

That’s ok, they’ll send them back, after all, they’re friends with us.

Oh, forgot, the Neocons/Globalists insisted on Gay Marriage and flying that sick flag at our embassy, so now they’re friends with Russia. Oh well...doesn’t matter, since all that matters is Ukraine!!! Ukraine!!! Ukraine!!!.

It’s probably how the Obama administration, on the down low of course, with full deniability, timely gave bin Ladin’s men the information they needed to take Seal Team Six’s troop transport helicopter out of the sky.

This very well might be an excellent example of fake news, and how gullible large media organizations are today.

Supposedly, the scheme works because somebody types name@navy.ml instead of name@navy.mil.

But a few minutes of doing the kind of research any college student who knows about how email is routed on the internet could do shows that emails with that particular typo in the domain get routed to servers that are almost certainly run by companies with US DOD contracts.

How about an example. Lets see where email@navy.ml goes.

The top choice mail server for that domain is handle.catchemail.ml. And its IP address resolves to a server operated by Amazon AWS, ec2-34-254-151-37.eu-west-1.compute.amazonaws.com.

That server is in Ireland.

How about email@army.ml? Not surprisingly it resolves to handle.catchemail.ml also.

I will leave it as an exercise for the students to figure out why the email server to catch mis-addressed emails for the US DOD happens to be outside of the USA.

More than one way to block this from occurring.

Which is probably why it is not actually happening.
