The department was down 500 officers while facing mass retirements amid the defund movement in the wake of protests and riots in reaction to the death of George Floyd.
Former Austin law enforcement members told Fox News Digital that the city’s move to end the partnership with the state has put politics in front of public safety and serves as an example of city leaders once again caving to left wing pressure rather than supporting police officers.
"This has gone off the rails," Austin Police Retired Officers Association President Dennis Farris told Fox News Digital. "I think he flipped out without knowing the facts and got some bad advice from his advisers."

This is pretty confusing to me. It seems that just after the city council votes, Abbott sent 30 state troopers there.
6 people dead in five separate weekend incidents in Austin.
AUSTIN, Texas - The Austin Police Department (APD) is investigating five separate incidents over the weekend that left six people dead.-PJThis past weekend, APD responded to four homicides, three of which were on Sunday, July 16.
"It is a very busy night here in Austin," said Corporal Jose Mendez.
Keep Austin Weird!
Austin defunded so many of their cops. Now they want DPS troopers gone that Abbott sent in.
Keep Austin Weird
Does Austin’s mayor have a police protection detail? I’ll bet he does.
He should immediately disband that protective detail. Lead by example.
And if he doesn’t disband the detail, no officer should agree to serve on it.
Demand a transfer. Call in sick until the transfer is approved.
Liberals are a cancer. They will turn Texas blue in our lifetime. It started in Austin
What is the Governor and legislature going to do about it?
The one, and worst, outcome from this is the fact that the wealthy ones move out of Austin. Move to the suburbs and make sure they destroy them to.
The best thing these so-called, Red State Governors, could do, would be to make the cities extremely safe. So safe that liberals never want to leave them. And in making them so safe, the liberals will have no need to move to the suburbs or the small towns further out.
A mayor blocks a governor order....news to me
Just an all-around, classy city. I was even thinking of moving there.

Our DPS has statewide jurisdiction so they can patrol anywhere within the state of Texas — including Austin.
However, what the Austin city council has done is to remove any coordinated partnership between APD and the DPS.
So in essence they have broke the lines of communication that would allow those 2 agencies to work hand-in-hand.
I’m so glad I dont live in that cesspool. As it is, we live 60 miles away which is still too close.
Nope, it started in Washington D.C. and FDR's rDNA vaccine for Federalism.
It just took a couple of generations for the side-effects to be noticeable.

Make jokes at your own peril, but the conservatives are losing Texas rapidly! There’s too much damn crap going on behind the curtains between the RINOS and the demonRATS partnership! The demonRAT voters are quickly outnumbering the conservatives. Texas is not guaranteed a red state in 2024. If we lose Texas put a nail in this nation’s coffin…SHE DEAD!
The woketards in the People’s Hell-Spawned Kakistocracy of Austin are determine to sink the city down to the hull-crushing abyss of Portland, San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. So they recently elected Kirk Watson and a majority of radical leftists to the city council. And the criminals are happy with their BFF, José “Commie” Garza, as Travis County District Attorney.
....last I saw on the liberal Austin teevee stations, the Austin police dept is short at least 500 postions....great....that’s why we live in the suburbs....
So defund police after humiliating them with civilian review boards taking potshots and defense lawyers setting the police up for jail time if they weren’t gentle to the criminals rushing at them with swords, switchblades and various calibers of weapons.
Then wonder in bewilderment how the city is unsafe.
We wouldnt live inside of Travis County.
Of course the suburbs are spreading outwards into counties beyond.
I’m ready to move 60 miles further.
Being 60 miles away is still too close for us. For starters it affects our property taxes and it affects our ground water with all these little 10 acre plots putting in their own wells. Then there’s the traffic and their liberal values who cant add anything to to our country life.
