A massive 7.2 magnitude earthquake has increased the risk of a volcano in Alaska erupting imminently as the aviation level was raised to red.
The Shishaldin Volcano has been spewing great plumes of ash into the air since July 11, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO).
A US Coast Guard overflight confirmed lava erupted the same day within the summit crater.
The latest data from the AVO, as of just before midnight on July 15, showed frequent explosion signals are being detected, with some explosions sending plumes of ash as high as 20,000 ft above sea level.

This volcano wouldn’t erupt if we ate grasshoppers and drank cockroach milk.

Well....a seismologist(RIP David Johnson), a curmudgeon that refused to evacuate(RIP Harry Truman). and folks caught in the pyroclastic flow. Flooding was extensive afterward, as well. The swelling on the north face led to a huge landslide, and with pressure relieved from above...BOOM!

“Sounds like how Mt St Helen’s began. People doubted that would erupt, too.”
But with those repeated ash plumes visible from 100+ miles away, we were getting increasingly suspicious it might!

Give or take about a million and a half.

Cool! Very entrepreneurial. My grandma send my sister and me vials of ash from her yard in Hayden, Idaho. I think I still have that vial around here somewhere.
The coolest commemorative thing ever was the Mt. St. Helens whiskey bottle I bought for mom & dad (this one is not mine).

“57 people were killed. SO at least 57 didn’t take it seriously enough.”
Mt. St. Helens was the first time I realized how volcanos could kill so many people. Movies made by people miles away (who died shooting the film) showed the hot ash and gas moving at hundreds of miles per hour and apparently just not stopping. Cars racing along a dirt road at 60 miles per hour we caught and destroyed.
All other footage of volcanos typically showed lava moving across the landscape at a few miles an hour. I think people (except for Harry Truman) had no idea how far the explosion could kill.

We NEVER had volcanos like that before we had internal combustion automobiles.
