"A Dozen NYPD Officers Arrest a Guy Smoking a Cigarette Outside as Rapists and Murderers Roam Free"

So with murder, rape, assaults, burglary, and shoplifting running a mok in NY, they send twelve police officers to arrest a guy smoking a cigarette outside. In a city in which a guy feels free to ride his motorcycle down the street just shooting random people, the police apparently have their priorities in line.

Priories. Murderers, rapists, robbers are everywhere. But we have got to crack down on cigarette smokers.

I think what happened here is he was smoking in an unauthorized location(breaking the law) and was asked for his id for a citation and then failed to give ID. That is when the officer stated he was going down to the station so he could be identified.

The JBTs appreciate your support. You are not required by law to carry or present identification. You tell them who you are, but "Ihre Papiere bitte" isn't quite where we're at yet.

A girl is studying in the park. She’s not bothering anyone! To the contrary. Bless her for behaving, and trying to improve herself.

That cop was a complete ass. seems to be a common condition.

Oh, and here’s another one. A legally blind old vet is walking on a public sidewalk. He’s got a foldable white cane in his back pocket. He’s not doing a damn thing wrong. Leave him alone, right?

Saw that one a few weeks ago. Neither of those people should be in any position of authority. I'm sure the bootlickers will make all kinds of excuses. They are right here on this thread. Showed up in force to protect their masters.

Hamstrung they do the soft targets and go home. Just look at who is in control here. You came into the department for a career time spent on the job and now to keep that job and not lose your time you have to endure the despicable pukes that are running the show and hope for a better day. Dont be angry at the police be angry at who you allowed to steal an election because voting is a farse

"You are not required by law to carry or present identification."

That's for people who don't violate the law. If you commit a violation of the law and are going to be issued a ticket, your identity needs to be verified. If you don't have ID on you, you need to be taken to the precinct so your identity can be verified and the ticket can be issued.

This post has forced me to add “Bad LEOS” to my Politics links and articles directory (102 separate subdirectories) - sort of documenting the worst proofs of the coming destruction of the USA and the loss of liberty and freedoms worldwide.

There’s lots of stuff I just ignore - just too much to document.

Sigh.

No. Not at all. Cops cuff him, then cart him off to jail.
This is not a city policy malfunction. It is out-of-control policing.”

Anecdotal. How many police officers died going into the towers on 9/11 to help and save people?

> Anecdotal. <

If by that, you mean that bad cops are in the minority. I would agree. But here’s the thing. Policing is a profession in which society can’t afford any bad folks. In a way, it’s like with airline pilots. We can’t afford 10% or 20% of pilots to be rogue actors. Same with cops.

As a side note, I get that policing is a stressful profession, one where quick decisions must be made. So I do NOT fault cops who make the wrong decision when under pressure.

I very much fault cops who casually decide to behave in a rude and brutal manner. It’s those cops who are weakening public support for the police.

> How many police officers died going into the towers on 9/11 to help and save people? <

That’s a fair thing to bring up. I would suppose even a fair number of “bad” cops died that day. So, yes. The situation is complicated. Many cops are heroes. They behave professionally, and more.

It’s the ones who *deliberately* behave unprofessionally that must be dealt with. More training about de-escalation is needed. And leave your ego at home.

So, you are saying that you are required by the law to carry ID? I think the Supreme Court will be interested in hearing your bovine excrement on this subject.

It may well be that your legal view is correct, but on the street in the real world it is risky at best not to carry ID.

You do not want to play lawyer when a cop asks you for your ID.

Give it to them calmly and politely—if you want to hire a lawyer later that is your choice.

Yes, because we have become a nation of men and not laws. Lawless thugs are an anathema to a Free Republic. Be sure to bow down to your masters when they tell you to, or do you expect "professional curtesy" to protect you?

Please cut and paste where I said people are required to carry ID. I’ll wait for you to do that before I proceed.

To each his own. But first politely ask what crime you are suspected of. There is no need to ID if there is no crime. A cop can ask for ID, but can require it only when there is probable cause (and a legitimate traffic stop counts). But mere “suspicious behavior” is not a crime. It doesn’t count.

Yes, you can give ID up voluntarily. It would save you some hassle, probably. And I say “probably” because you never know how the cop will enter the stop into his database.

“But first politely ask what crime you are suspected of.”

I think that is very bad advice.

Let me explain.

If a cop walks up to you what is the outcome you want?

You want the encounter to end as quickly as possible with no adverse consequences to you.

The best strategy for that is to politely comply—with your mouth shut.

That increases the odds of reaching your goal.

Being right can equal being street-dumb. This is a good example of that rule.

I will not argue against that strategy. As I noted earlier, to each his own.

But it’s not for me. If I’m walking down a sidewalk (or wherever), and a cop stops me and demands ID, I’d immediately want to know why. I’d ask, politely. Not just because I’m talking to a cop. I try to be polite with everyone.

Notice that I would not automatically refuse to identify, or become belligerent.
That truly is a losing strategy.

Now here’s where it would get interesting. Suppose the cop tells me I must ID because I look suspicious (or something else equally vague). The Supreme Court has already ruled that you don’t have to ID in that case.

Would I ID? I guess it depends on the particular situation.

Oh, and here’s a question for you. It’s not all that different from the ‘requesting ID’ scenario. Suppose you are stopped for speeding, and the cop asks to search your car.
Would you consent to a search?

For me, that would be a hard no. Always.
