It's that awkward English language again.

The author could have written "turned himself in" but that would have riled a lot of folks up.

"turned himself or herself in" works, but is as awkward as "turned themselves in."

"turned themself in" (singular) doesn't work even though the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, 5th Edition says it is a real word:

Himself or herself. Used as a gender-neutral reflexive pronoun.
Themselves.
Reflexive and emphatic form of them when them is used as a non-gender-specific singular pronoun (singular they).

Is there a simple solution?

As far as I can tell, it’s woke vernacular with a hedge just in case this particular they/them is a them.
