Humans pumped so much groundwater out of the Earth that the planet has begun to wobble detectably on its axis, a new study has found.
On its own terms, the magnitude of the new wobble is slight — a matter of millimeters, which puts it in the same approximate speed category as Earth’s slowly drifting continents.
But the findings published earlier this month in Geophysical Research Letters show the extent to which human action — in the form of dam construction, groundwater drilling and the burning of fossil fuels — are impacting the very position of the Earth.
They also provide powerful corroboration for something scientists had long suspected but had remained unproven: the staggering depletion of the world’s groundwater reserves over the past several decades.
The scope of the findings released this month were startling. Between 1993 and 2010, the scientists found, human society — and mostly human agriculture — had depleted 2,510 gigatons of water.
That’s the equivalent of 600 cubic miles of lost freshwater, more than five times the volume of Lake Erie or half the volume of Lake Huron.
At that rate, we would run through the equivalent of the 2,900 cubic miles of water that fill Lake Superior by the end of the century.

Well......Hank Johnson tried to warn us but noooooobody listened.
Is this group headed by the guy from Guam? That was concerned about people causing the island tip over?
to being ugly bags of mostly water.
Ya right..... so let’s get more vaccines out there and murder a few billion people!! ...../sarc
The Flat Earth Society may have an opinion on this. Shaq O’Neal claims to be a member. Not sure if he’s just joking or not. Shaq makes some good business decisions, but when he speaks he often sounds less than literate.
Just look what happened to Guam!
I thought that earths geospatial characteristics were determined by it’s mass, orbital mechanics and proximity to other celestial bodies, not junk science.
Dang, there goes Guam.
You are my political brothers but most of you are dense when it comes to the environment.
You think because God said the earth is ours and the animals and plants etc in it that we can’t effect it. “ 26 Then God said, “Let us make man[h] in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.””
Bullcrap.
The Bible also says:
“Genesis 2:15. Humans are commanded to care for God’s creation.
Leviticus 25:1-7. The land itself must be given a rest and not abused.”
If we can’t harm/change the environment then why would god have needed to have told us to care for it and not abuse it????
I’m not even touching the science which is overwhelmingly on my side.
I thought I was listing to one side.
This from the crowd that can’t grasp correlation is not causation.
BS, a waste of digital space.
The crust of the earth is like the skin on an apple. Compared to the whole earth, it is insignificant. So the crust of the earth with its water moved around is not a problem.
The above information makes so much sense that it must soon be classified as......yes......."racisssssst."
We can change small parts of the planet but causing big changes on the entire earth is a big no. Not yet. Someday maybe but not now.
And not only is not the science on your side but it says quite the opposite.
So no.
But this is a free country (sort of) so if you want to shiver in fear that drilling a well will make the earth start flipping around you just go right ahead.
Just do not expect anyone with an IQ over 3 to join you.
Look at a map of China, it’s the dam tilt I tell everyone.
Mile thick ice sheets during the ice age had no effect but only humans can affect a wobble.
Keep eating Fatso
