If anyone thought Donald Trump's legals woes would eat into his public support in red state America then no one thought to tell the people of Pickens, South Carolina.
Its population of 3,300 was swollen by thousands more who crammed into its main street to see the former president hold his first rally since being being charged with mishandling classified documents.
Supporters behind him waved 'witch hunt' signs as he described how he had been charged under the Espionage Act.
'Me? the espionage act?' he said, describing how it was a an 'act for crimes so heinous' that the death penalty was needed.
'it's one of the most vicious legal theories ever put in a court of law. there's never been anything like this,' he added.
Insiders said the words were not the most important thing. The size of the crowd was what mattered about the day, making it a huge show of support.
And it brought the former president to one of the early state's most pro-Trump counties, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The tiny city of Pickens closed its streets for the former president, packing in supporters who had traveled from North Carolina and Georgia, as well as South Carolina.
They stood on Main Street, between the county courthouse and Biven's hardware store.
They heard Trump describe how as president he had 'absolute right' to declassify documents. And he said he was changing up his language because of the way he had been forced to appear in court earlier this month.
'Now the gloves are off from that standpoint, what they've done is so terrible,' he said.
'So I'll speak differently than I would have three weeks ago...'

Bet they spent money, too.
Note to local and county pols and businesses: If more of you used your noggins and some elbow grease, you could enjoy a quite a profit and sales tax goose if you took advantage of the retail and hospitality windfalls a Trump visit could afford.
“Lindsay who is looking chubsey now should have left the stage in shame. He stayed and thanked them like the boos were yahs
One of Lindsay’s problems is he feels no shame.”
Donald Trump handled well the booing against Graham, balancing the situation. He didn’t ask the booers to stop - Graham spoke admiringly of Trump. Trump did not scold the booers. Trump commented, almost as san aside, that Graham could be relied upon to do the right thing - or something to that effect.
Manhattan DA’s Office Now Coming After Melania Trump in Hush-Money Case
Both President Trump and his wife anticipated the legal battles that lay ahead and are prepared to face them together.

RE: Didn’t hear about the rally???
Don’t you read Free Republic?
That’s it. I’m going out on a limb. I’m calling it now. If Trump is the nominee, the GOP is gonna win South Carolina. There. I said it.
Trump needs to eject Linda. No ifs, ands, or buts.
The biggest problem for all of us is the GOPe Senate. They were behind every traitorous act done to Trump. I am sure Trump is aware of what an obstacle they are and he is trying to have some influence there using this twat Lindsay.
I am sure Trump knows Mitch McConnell stabbed him in the back each and every time. Remember Mitch made it impossible for Trump to ever make a recess appointment or put and keep people Trump wanted in certain positions.
The Senate is the pit of vipers that are behind the destruction and incumbent Senators are like stage 4 cancer. Almost impossible to get rid of.
The GOPe Senate will rubber stamp any POTUS who is one of them. They will work against anyone who isn’t.
I think the charge was that Jesus was setting himself up as a king with greater authority than Caesar.
Look up "Trump Derangement Syndrome" and your comment is cited as peak TDS.
Why not go back to Adam cast out of the Garden, Mr. Whataboutism.

If you can’t control the man, you next go after his family.
BTTT
The Demscum are trying to destroy Trump. All they are doing is making him a martyr. When he gets elected, Trump can just pardon himself.
I wonder...
Lindsey Graham was booed vigorously in the county he was born in. I loathe that man so much, seeing him booed in his home county was the highlight of the evening for me.
In planning, did Trump:
1) Seek bolster rally attendance with the home boy Senator?
2) Set Lindsey Graham up for a taste of reality?
Spontaneous or planned, to me, this is a huge red flag waving in front of the DC establishment for both parties. Their witch hunts are only making Trump stronger. Don’t be surprised if the next charges against Trump include the death penalty or if the DS puts a hit on Trump. Their timeline to get Trump is getting short.
This no longer feels like “game”, this feels like “end game.”
Hardly any politician does. They get their awesome paycheck, perks, Healthcare etc, and that is all that matters at the end of the day.
Ca.ifornians who say that are simpply projecting
Anybody with a few functioning brain cells realizes that these latest charges are as phony as Joe Biden’s resume.
One of Lindsay’s problems is he feels no shame.
Arrogance, pretentiousness and lots of donor cash can do that to a man or whatever he is.
Also, knowing that the state GOP, RNC, and the Democrats will help him get re-elected. If he’s primaried, the Democrats and open primaries will ensure that he wins the primary. After that, South Carolina will hold its nose and vote for him because they don’t want the Democrat to win.
I doubt Lindsey Graham cared much. He’s in the Senate as long as he wants from what I’ve witnessed of the voting electorate there. Those folks have had ample times where they could have gotten rid of his rotten rump but didn’t.
I pray to God above you are correct about the Endgame. It’s long past time for this to come to a completion. 2020 was a nightmare. This now has become a nightmare on steroids. A weaponized DOJ certainly must speak to those who aren’t even fans of President Trump. Perhaps they realize that if the DC swamp can do this to him, imagine what they can do to anyone who gets in their way. And I don’t know about other people, but my pockets are NOT deep.
Hey guys! I’m sorry you didn’t get that I was being sarcastic — starting my post as a never-trumper might rail on him.
I am ANYTHING but that.
My point was not to contradict my favorite president. It was to echo him and say it’s been about 2000 years since anyone was more viciously and repeatedly railroaded — and for no cause except he came into town to upend the moneychangers’ tables.
Sorry for the confusion. I didn’t think I was being that subtle; but maybe I was.
