If anyone thought Donald Trump's legals woes would eat into his public support in red state America then no one thought to tell the people of Pickens, South Carolina.
Its population of 3,300 was swollen by thousands more who crammed into its main street to see the former president hold his first rally since being being charged with mishandling classified documents.
Supporters behind him waved 'witch hunt' signs as he described how he had been charged under the Espionage Act.
'Me? the espionage act?' he said, describing how it was a an 'act for crimes so heinous' that the death penalty was needed.
'it's one of the most vicious legal theories ever put in a court of law. there's never been anything like this,' he added.
Insiders said the words were not the most important thing. The size of the crowd was what mattered about the day, making it a huge show of support.
And it brought the former president to one of the early state's most pro-Trump counties, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The tiny city of Pickens closed its streets for the former president, packing in supporters who had traveled from North Carolina and Georgia, as well as South Carolina.
They stood on Main Street, between the county courthouse and Biven's hardware store.
They heard Trump describe how as president he had 'absolute right' to declassify documents. And he said he was changing up his language because of the way he had been forced to appear in court earlier this month.
'Now the gloves are off from that standpoint, what they've done is so terrible,' he said.
'So I'll speak differently than I would have three weeks ago...'

There actually was an instance of a more vicious legal theory: when the scribes and Pharisees and deep-staters of Jerusalem brought Jesus Christ up on "blasphemy" charges. But that was another time and a far different circumstance. I probably should not have brought it up. There's an infinite degree of import there.

I’m disappointed that I didn’t hear about this rally. Was this really a rally or a campaign stop? While it was 5 hours from me at the north west tip of SC, I might have gone.

It was a great rally in South Carolina, broadcast live at OAN. President Trump was fabulous, reciting chapter and verse of the lies and thuggery that are now commonplace from the Democrats in government. Likely they’re repeating the rally today and in coming days and weeks. The crowds were huge, huge.
Yes. Attending an outside rally can be a physically challenging. Standing for 8 to 1o hours is not easy for some of us. I’ve been to three rallies so far. I would go again.
Looking back at my Trump emails, I got the Pickens rally announcement on Jun 29. Not a lot of notice.
I really enjoy reading the Californidiotiots that choose to reply to the articles with arrogant pronouncements about how stupid people at Trump rallies must be to be at the event.
They friggin live in CA and don’t see the complete failure of their choices as they side step the literal human feces on their sidewalks.

let’s consider he was speaking in the context of American history...he isn’t making himself to be a world historian or a theologian.
In both ‘16 and ‘20 DJT considered New Hampshire as a tossup state and,as a result,held several rallies there...four of which I’ve attended. I hope he considers the state a tossup next year because I want to see him again!
