Ukraine is not a litmus test. There is room within the Republican Party for a range of views on foreign policy, from neocon to peace through strength (which is the mainstream position within the Republican Party) to isolationist.

I believe that both Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis are in the peace through strength camp (which is my view). Pence is trying to differentiate his position from the roughly similar positions of Trump and DeSantis, to gain some traction in the primaries. It is a fool’s game.

First, Pence is trying to establish himself as “the alternative” to Trump and DeSantis, which is kind of running for third place in a contest where only first place counts.

Second, given our two-party system, for the Republican to win in the general election, we need to appeal to all voters who agree with us on most issues. We can’t say, oh, you only agree with us 80 percent of the time, you should vote Democrat.
