An American fencer's outburst after a match may have cost his entire team a chance to compete at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
After a semifinals loss at the Pan-American games in Peru, Curtis McDowald went on a tirade that disqualified the entire USA men's épée team.
On the decisive point, McDowald was penalized with a red card, ending the match. After the loss, McDowald's opponent tried to shake his hand, but he angrily slapped it.
As other members shook hands, McDowald, a 2020 Olympian, kicked and put his foot through a free-standing banner at the venue.
Because of his actions, the team was eliminated from the competition, which resulted in them forfeiting the bronze-medal match. Furthermore, since they were disqualified, they earned zero Olympic qualifying points at the event.
The United States entered the tournament as the top-ranked team in the event.

American Fencer:
Sigh .
..
I looked it up, but there really was no need to. 1390 project yet again.
You can take the boy out of the ‘hood...
Isn’t fencing a gay sport?
Gee. No self control. Who woulda thunk it?
Yep.
No.
It is not.
A bit snobbish at times, but not homosexual.
He thought too highly of himself, and not highly enough
about the team or others.
You have to keep your composure. If you have determined
you’re better than everyone else, and you get penalized,
it’s sometimes hard to contain yourself.
I feel bad for the rest of the team. In time I hope he
can grasp that he was wrong, and not blame this on the
officials or others.
In sports, you don’t always get the calls. You have to
accept that as part of the game. It’s just the way it
is.
Back in the Cold War years, the Eastern Block nations
and the USSR were pretty willing to fudge judging at
times. You still had to live with it.

>Isn’t fencing a gay sport?
No though obviously less interest in the US since our whole history is tied up with firearms and not swords.
Relevant to the topic, it’s one of the few sports with any decorum left. (Prior olympics sites keep getting shut down) but last I checked it’s a black tie event to attend at the top levels. Bitchy petulant loser behavior is Not Allowed.
What is it with these young people with no impulse control.
A disgrace to our nation.
The acceptable actions of minority athletes here in the US are not acceptable worldwide. They don’t get the pass in world competition because of their race as they do in the US.
Well, personally, I think the sport kinda needs to lighten up Francis. He’s a competitor who lost his temper but heck, it’s not like he attacked anyone or assaulted an umpire. So he kicked over something......
Kick him off the team, suspend him, whatever....but penalize the whole team? Really? Lighten up Francis.
He must have put in a lot of work to get this far. And now due to a petulant outburst he has thrown it all away. And additionally cost his team dearly. And I’m sure this is not his first such outburst.
Reminds me of Quay Walker pushing the Lion’s medical staff member.
zero. self. control.
“Soft bigotry of low expectations”.
