OceanGate and Heaven’s gate , Hmmm
a literal water gate
Maybe Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) did not like the way Eddie always lied to his mom. Fortunately Ralphie only had a BB gun ;)
“The hull would immediately heat the air in the sub to around the surface of the sun’s temperature, as a wall of metal and seawater smashed one end of the boat to the other, all in around 30 milliseconds,”
Carbon Fiber is stronger than steel in tension. Carbon Fiber is flexible. In compression the polymer matrix in effect becomes the only damn thing holding it together.
Yes. I’ve read that post in the past. In that case even the water around it would boil, I’m guessing.

In addition that hull should have been tested to destruction on the surface. It would have failed early.
🎶 We all died in a crappy submarine
A crappy submarine
A crappy submarine. 🎵
If you want to imagine what an implosion is like at 12,000 ft below sea level, stuff 5 hamsters in a Pepsi can and run over it at 60 miles an hour.
Oops, sorry. Wrong thread!
My bet is that the mothership had records of any and all comms between it and the submersible.
I’ll also bet that 8 hour delay was put to good use.
” 60 miles an hour.”
The speed in your test would not be a factor.
Dropping the car on it at any speed would be more accurate.
How about dropping the ROV to depth EMPTY.
Lift it up, drop it down, rinse/repeat until it implodes.
Now there is a test worth doing.
“Holy S.................. gurgle, gurgle......
Who listens to engineers anynore?
30 ms is a LONG time.
Hence the need for multidirectional laminate layups.
LOL!!!!
They would be reeling in an empty hook in this situation
“Dropping the car on it at any speed would be more accurate.”
THAT requires extra expense of a crane and quick release block. IM NOT PAYING FOR THAT!
and yes, a laterally imposed radial, unidirectional crush is just as representative as your drop. A more realistic test would be a multidirectional radial compression.
Charges were issued on the dead man
