Trump says 'vital' federal role remains for regulating abortion

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former President Donald Trump said the federal government has a role in regulating late term abortions, but declined to provide specifics on what that role was in a speech to a conservative audience on Saturday night.

Trump has been relatively quiet on the issue of abortion throughout his campaign for a second term, putting him at odds with other Republican presidential hopefuls including his current biggest threat to the party nomination, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who enacted a six week ban on abortions in his state.

"There of course remains a vital role for the federal government in protecting unborn life," Trump told attendees at the Faith and Freedom Coalition's annual conference in Washington, D.C., on Saturday night. "We will defeat the radical Democrat policy of extreme late term abortion."

More specifically, as the article reports.
  1. Harris, anytime.
  2. Trump, no late term (21+ weeks, about 1% of abortions)
  3. Scott, 15 weeks
  4. DeSantis, 6 weeks
  5. Pence, none

So, what is the correct limitation? For myself, while it would be best to have none, I do think we need to allow exceptions for the life of the mother, rape, and incest. Overall, I think pre-heartbeat, which is around 6 weeks.

Pence support 15 weeks “as a minimum nationwide standard” on abortion.

Yes, I see elsewhere that Pence is called for a 15-week abortion ban while this article says his stance is for a "federal ban on it entirely". And here is more, from Politico from yesterday: "Former vice president Mike Pence vowed Friday that “we must not rest” until abortion is outlawed in every state in the country, pushing for legislative action in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn nationwide protection for abortion rights."

For me, there is no abortion permitted. However, I can only guide my life and cannot guide another person’s life. I can’t stop a woman from getting an abortion if that what she wants, but I should not be made to pay for any part of that abortion, including subsidizing Planned Parenthood’s pencils and paper.

I agree, no taxpayer money for abortion, directly or indirectly, and automatic or required coverage in insurance plans. If someone insists on killing a baby, let they pay for it directly.

‘Exceptions for the life of the mother, rape and incest’..

……which is exactly what President Trump said
…..and ONLY those exceptions

The life of the mother has always been an option……even though some mothers would choose their child

There are known accounts of women who have been raped, but finding they were pregnant, chose to bring the child to fruition/ term

Trump has criticized DeSantis for the 6-week ban. The only thing he’s been clear about is late term abortions, which are less than 1% of them. What about the other 99%? Are they now okay for Trump? What limit would he agree to? Scott’s 12 week? Or just the 21 week, which is late term?

Nothing Federal about abortion. EVERY state has had it on its books and about 1900..not one state allowed abortion.

There is no logical argument for a time frame for abortion. It’s either a human baby, or it’s not. Yes, there is a political argument, but it’s a stupid argument in relation to the seriousness of killing a human baby.

Saying “Nothing federal” means what? And what about our 2024 candidates? Trump has spoke on 21 weeks, Scott 15, DeSantis 6, and Pence none. Saying this is not a federal issue won’t work—federal laws, federal money, and candidates. And I’m not dismissing that states now again have roles but we need to discuss the federal role as Democrats are keen to approve federal abortion law.

So we are giving women a special license to murder?

Rape and incest are super rare and hard to prove, so none of those from me, I don't care if it is 1 week old. But, the Life of the mother of course.

If she wants to invoke the first two, why not have a day in court for the infant? Attempted murder trial for the mother. Just asking for a friend.

If you believe that a person should be free to live their lives, that would include the decision of whether they carry a baby to term or not.

You cannot say that people should be free to live their lives and then start putting restrictions around how they live their lives. That’s one of those, “I believe this, but”. The moment you say “but”, you are admitting that you don’t really believe your position.

Any mother who kills their unborn child will be held accountable for their actions, as we all well. I do believe we should do everything we can to convince women to carry their kids to term.

It’s women. They reserve the right to be flakes when making up their minds. Even the life and death stuff.

Completely irrelevant. They barely squeezed Kavanaugh through Repuke Senate. You think they’re going to pass a complete abortion ban? That’s nuts and if the election is to be turned on that then would be quite dumb Indeed. You might be able to get some form of “we won’t fund it” bill passed and MAYBE you can find consensus on extreme late term abortion (7,8,9 months in). You might so be able to convince a few Rats and Rinos not to support “post birth abortion” otherwise known as first degree murder. There is 0 chance of getting a total nationwide ban through any form of congress in the next Presidency. Pretending that you will means you’re a liar and shouldn’t grt any votes.

Difference on the abortion issue is the fact that there are two lives. So aborting a child isn’t just affecting your life and your body. Some people belive it’s a life and others don’t. Can’t even grt everyone to agree in the first 20 comments in a conservative forum. Good luck on a national campaign with the media having their food on the balance.

I’m also going to point on that this is what Pence Isacariot does. He promises things that he already know he won’t fulfill. Think pre Jan 6th. He went to Trump rallies telling everyone he was going to fix it and atop the cheat and he already knew he was going to do no such thing. These people are frauds! This is no different.

By that, everyone except Pence supports abortion, including Trump.

See Hyde Amendment...forbids use of federal funds except for life of mother, rape, incest.
