Teachers’ unions constantly strike, demanding more cash and less work, while claiming that they’re not teaching students for the sake of the students. Meanwhile, they are the interface between a public school system and the nation’s children that has destroyed education and test scores while constantly advocating against policies, like test scores and standards, that provide an objective view of outcomes.
All of that was bad enough, but during the pandemic, teachers’ unions became the loudest and most forceful voices demanding the shutdown of schools because it made life easier for them. Zoom school raised suicide rates and lowered student test scores.
How badly? Catastrophically.
The decline in math scores last year was the biggest in the past 50 years, according to newly released federal data.
The average math score for 13 year olds declined 9 points between the 2019-20 and 2022-23 school years.
The average reading score for 13 year olds declined 4 points between the 2019-20 and 2022-23 school years.
50 years. Time for another strike and claims that if only we paid teachers like we do NBA players, public students would be finally able to read. Meanwhile, teachers have managed to secure six-figure salaries in New York City, along with Los Angeles and Chicago, but somehow they just don’t have enough cash.
It’s abundantly clear that there’s no way forward to fixing the country’s educational crisis without school choice, breaking up special interest monopolies, from the Department of Education to major textbook publishers and the public school system, and its biggest parasites, the teachers’ unions..
And the full weight of the federal government needs to be brought to bear against the teachers’ unions that have greedily destroyed education for generations of children… before they find some other pretext for shutting down schools for a year.

Get woke, go broke.
Come on man, its not that bad, at least 20% of high school graduates here in los angeles can read and write...
This kind of surprises me. With kids spending less time in government schools I would have figured learning and test scores would increase.
Catholic schools showed no change. Why they were opened and working.
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
“Teachers Union Lockdowns Caused Worst Drop in Student Scores in 50 Years”
Hard to believe that there was any room for public schools to further fall.
My hoo hoo shrinks to a half inch in the cold. The teachers union starts out with a half.
The pandemic may have had some effect, but the real culprit is the US Department of Education. The national level of education has been steadily dropping since it’s formation in 1980 under President Carter. It was to be his legacy.
Control of Education should be at State level as per the US Constitution.
Test scores do not determine success in anything.
Test scores are often about unimportant stuff.
The Teachers Union (not all teachers are members and there are more than one “teacher’s union”.
1. What is the score range? 9 points on a 1600 point SAT is a lot less than a 36 point ACT. (Yes, I know those aren't the tests used).
2. What is the correlation between test scores and length/tightness of the states' educational quarantine? I heard Florida had little or no drop while NY and California really plummeted.
Public school teachers pay scale needs to be set by the students grade rate.
And they don’t get to do the testing
I’d settle for annual literacy tests for government school teachers.
Agree but a sheep skin from any college is a free pass even if it’s BA.
School systems are more like D.C. it’s club and your not in it.
but I have no faith or trust in any of our teacher core now, even ones I'm related too...
they are unionzied which means they go along to get along and don't speak up for horrible practices...
they have one of the easiest college degrees available, get a no fire job with excellent pay and benefits and huge pensions and half the year OFF.....
and then they had the audacity to sit home in their pj's and pretend they were teaching and some school unions demanded even more teaching from home and then they decided that they suffered so much during the stay at home period they needed extra pay.....
its all total BS.....
