NYCHA will announce on Wednesday a $1.5 billion plan to demolish and redevelop two massive and crumbling public housing complexes in Manhattan, City Hall confirmed.
The sweeping redevelopment deal calls for the construction of more than 2,000 new public housing apartments at the Fulton Houses and Chelsea-Elliot Houses, enough for every resident currently residing at the existing buildings, officials said late Tuesday.
“This is how you create new public housing for the next generation, this is what we need,” said Miguel Avecedo, president of the Fulton Houses Tenant Association.
The new units would include amenities rarely seen in public housing, including resident-controlled in-unit heating and cooling, new dishwashers, washers and dryers.
Under the plan, which was first reported by The New York Times, rents will remain fixed at 30% of a tenant’s income.

Is the subsidizing bad decision making?
This is how you create new crime-ridden, drug-infested, Cabrini Green style slums...............
The new ones will smell like urine within 6 months.
Yep - when people don’t earn something honestly, they have no respect for it.
Public Housing should be a POW style camp in the middle of nowhere.
Notice that they are planning on GENERATIONS of people being on public housing.
Instead they should be planning on how to get people OUT of Public Housing.............But there’s no votes or money in that..............
Gee, NYC must be rolling in dough to be able to afford this. Will the public housing residents pay rent, are they really people in need like disabled Vets, or just more folks grabbing a rent free apartment?
Given the demographic, it'll smell like home.
‘Nicer’ part of town-more expensive. Near midtown, Greenwich Village. If the ‘shell’ of the buildings were in good shape they should have a lottery for the units. $100k to enter. The $100k goes to gutting the buildings. Then the new owners invest in their own remodel. After 10 years they can sell. The old tenants move to Harlem-it’s becoming gentrified.
Below-market. 30% of ones income. That means everyone else has to pay the rest. Fair?
Has anybody got a calculator, what is 1,500,000,000 / 2,000?
Just checked Wikipedia on Fulton Houses. 2 complexes will require a billion $ repairs. Forget it. Tear them down.
Average monthly rent $600. It’s no wonder the activists are willing to lay down in front of the progress vehicle. Where’s George Wallace when you need him?
Why are they not renovating the existing buildings?
Wow. Every welfare leech gets a $750,000 remodel courtesy of the taxpayer. Where can I sign up? I will laugh my head off when illegal aliens get put in these apartments and the blacks (who vote democrat every single time and turn these public housing ghettos in to violent hell holes) get kicked to the streets.
There is a great documentary about the Pruitt Igoe building in St Louis inadvertently exposing the mind set of the ghetto dwellers. They meant it to be a sad tale of woe from poor blacks but exposed the mentality of a welfare addicted woman once she is hooked on government cheese. They wanted to break thing just to stick it to whitey and see whitey fix things. Eventually whitey stopped fixing things and the whole place was literally razed to the ground because the dwellers had so thoroughly destroyed it.
I like the caveat, “will be capped at 30% of their income.”
They have no income.
YUP!
Army tents!
Purchase stocks in companies that make or sell washers and dryers for the Public Housing Authority in NYC. Within hours if not minutes or seconds, the washers and dryers will be disconnected and taken to the freigh elevator, out the door and sold.

Cabrini Green in Chicago comes to mind.
