Judge Aileen M. Cannon's previous ruling in former President Donald Trump's documents case showed "extreme bias" that warrants the Southern District of Florida's chief judge removing her from the case if she doesn't recuse herself, a nonprofit government watchdog has said.
Judge Cannon's September 2022 ruling appointing a special master to look over the records seized by the government from Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate was "unprecedented and unprincipled," according to the letter sent by Free Speech for People to Southern District of Florida Chief Judge Cecilia M. Altonaga.
That ruling "demonstrated that Judge Cannon could not be, nor even appear to be, an impartial decision-maker," the group insisted in its Wednesday letter.
"In this high-visibility, high-stakes proceeding, a judge who has exempted Trump from standard legal scrutiny undermines public confidence in the courts. Any move Judge Cannon makes in this matter will be tainted as either confirmation of existing bias or targeted efforts to appear neutral," the letter said.
Judge Cannon, a Trump appointee, was tapped to oversee Trump's federal criminal case over charges he violated the Espionage Act and obstructed justice by taking presidential records and classified documents to his Mar-a-Lago estate.
Trump was arraigned in Miami on June 13 and pled not guilty to federal Espionage Act and obstruction charges before a magistrate judge.
Judge Cannon is the same judge who in September granted Trump's request for a special master to screen the documents taken by the FBI from his Mar-a-Lago estate and ordered the U.S. Department of Justice to pause its review of the seized documents. The judge pointed to the "unique" position of a former president in explaining her ruling.

If she's disqualified, an "unbiased" judge who rubberstamps the government case will preside. If not, then she'll be so worried about appearing to side with Trump that she will rule against him on everything.
Just out of curiosity, why does a "watchdog" group have standing to file papers in a criminal case? Isn't the stick wielded by the government enough?

Any unbiased judge would throw the governments case out as its flawed on its merits. The Presidential Records Act is the only law that should apply to former documents that Presidents and Vice Presidents retain from their time in office. The Epspinoge act was enacted over a century ago and has never, even once, been applied in such a case.
Oh no, Judge Cannon might actually rule by the law and dismiss this nonsense and we can’t have that!

The cases will be in a leftist venue, with an Obama/Clinton appointed judge, with bazaar charges that strain or outright run counter to the law, exceed the statute of limitations, whichever.
Any venue or judge with the appearance of impartiality must not be allowed to stand.
