Unionized UPS employees voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike as contract negotiations continue, clearing the way for a potential work stoppage as soon as Aug. 1.

Some 97% of workers who cast ballots voted in favor of the move, Teamsters leaders said Friday, after more than a week of voting that preceded Tuesday night’s tentative deal on heat safety that would cover 340,000 delivery drivers and package handlers at the nation’s largest carrier.

Teamsters President Sean O’Brien said in a statement that the vote showed workers “are united and determined to get the best contract in our history at UPS. If this multibillion-dollar corporation fails to deliver on the contract that our hardworking members deserve, UPS will be striking itself.”

UPS acknowledged the vote outcome and noted that Friday’s strike authorization doesn’t automatically trigger a work stoppage.

I was working part-time for UPS back in the 90s when they had the big strike then. For a year, I was a Teamster. I never did get the strike pay. The DNC got it instead.

I'm willing to bet they put AC in them. USPS just wanted to up their ESG score by frying their drivers.

The days of me reflexing supporting corporations is long over.

I wonder how the large number of right to work states affects this.

I worked at the DFW UPS hub from 2018-2020. There was no a/c and the place was filthy. There were many fans throughout the warehouse, BFD. It was good for a part time job, 20 hours a week.

Shifts during the summer were brutal.

I went back into retirement after catching Covid in March 2020. I learned later that several coworkers caught Covid, too. Our shift averaged 40K packages, from all over the world.

I was thinking the vehicles, not the warehouses. Fans help but often aren’t enough. Aside from the initial costs, subterranean cooling might be a good option for warehouses. There are definitely solutions.

I’m stunned the trucks never had air conditioning. Horrid company to work for obviously.

We live in a rural area and sometimes the mail comes, and
sometimes it doesn’t. We rent a mailbox at the local market and check it every few days.

It will take specialized A/C for the delivery drivers to get any use of it and they have to turn off the truck at each delivery.

With both doors open, lots of space, and the backdoor frequently opened, all they can do is direct the blower on the driver and he will get a few minutes of cooling in between stops.

#5 Great pay. Hard work in all kinds of weather and they get to be on camera in the trucks all the time and be timed and tracked on everything.....
