Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis slighted former President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court picks Monday, saying they came up short of what DeSantis called the “gold standard” set by two of the court’s other conservative justices.
When asked by radio host Hugh Hewitt if he would “pledge to the Republicans as you go around the country that your judges will be like the Trump judges,” the 44-year-old DeSantis responded: “Well, actually, I would say we’ll do better than that.
“I respect the three appointees he did, but none of those three are at the same level of Justice [Clarence] Thomas and Justice [Samuel] Alito,” DeSantis said of Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett. “I think they [Alito and Thomas] are the gold standard.”
DeSantis went on to vow that if he is elected next year, his nominations for the high court “will be along the lines of a Sam Alito and a Clarence Thomas.”
“I inherited a very liberal state supreme court, maybe the most liberal in the country, very activist. But I was able to replace three of the four liberals my first month in office,” DeSantis said of his work as governor. “We have a really good track record on doing that. And in fact, two of my supreme court picks [Barbara Lagoa and Robert J. Luck] in my first year of office were elevated to the 11th Circuit by President Donald Trump.”

“Obviously we are going to shut down the border … Two, we are going to repeal Biden’s disastrous economic policies, his Green New Deal. And we are going to have things that are going to help jump-start this economy.” ***

For 25 years, every GOP President’s nominees had to face “Are they really an extremist conservative?” “Prove to us they are sensible and moderate” “Are they women haters who want to restrict a woman’s right to choose an abortion?”
And a lack of subservient kowtowing means they get “Borked.”
But Dems don’t have to prove their nominee will uphold rights under the Constitution.
When asked by radio host Hugh Hewitt if he would “pledge to the Republicans as you go around the country that your judges will be like the Trump judges,” the 44-year-old DeSantis responded: “Well, actually, I would say we’ll do better than that.
Ron is learning.
He smiled before and after he said that.
But he was on radio.
So disgusted with this fraction of a man

"I THINK DONALD TRUMP HAS DONE A BETTER JOB APPOINTING JUDGES TO BOTH THE USSC AND THE APPEALS COURT THAN ANY OTHER PERSON IN MY LIFETIME INCLUDING ONE OF MY HEREOS RONALD REAGAN." - RON DESANTIS
I’m not quite sure it’s sarcasm. It’s hard to tell.
If you created a nominee from scratch with the goal of filling Scalia's large shoes, such a nominee would look a lot like Neil Gorsuch.— Ron DeSantis (@GovRonDeSantis) February 1, 2017
“Look, this guy is a top-flight intellect. He’s got an impeccable pedigree… I think the President made a good choice.” - Ron DeSantis on Judge Kavanaugh https://t.co/A8qgO1CvJx pic.twitter.com/zLys3XRGKY— Trump War Room (@TrumpWarRoom) June 12, 2023
.@realDonaldTrump made an outstanding choice for the U.S. Supreme Court in Judge Amy Coney Barrett, who has had an exemplary legal career & been a terrific judge. She will apply the law of the Constitution faithfully & serve as an inspiration to millions of our fellow citizens.— Ron DeSantis (@GovRonDeSantis) September 27, 2020
The ONLY one I have concerns about is Kavanaugh I think Gorsuch is an excellent jurist Amy not sure about yet!!! Kavanaugh was NOT WORTH the HUGE fight we had over him!!
Trump did well, working with Mitch McConnell, in filling vacancies on all three levels: the Supremes, the Courts of Appeal and the District Courts. This was among his top accomplishments as President.
But, in 2020, in addition to losing his bid for re-election, we lost control of the Senate. And, since 2020, Trump has been calling Mitch names like “absolute loser.” To paraphrase something Trump himself said, “I prefer politicians who win.”
Those are the great ones! However, Trump was lucky to get the ones he did (thanks to McConnell) even if they don’t meet the gold standard.
The biggest problem is probably Roberts, and Trump had nothing to do with that.
And yet, he voted to overturn Roe vs. Wade. If we hadn’t had that fight to put Kavanaugh on the court, another nominee may not have voted that way. We will never know for sure.
Something else to consider, is that the liberals may well have fought hard , as they did with Kavanaugh, with any other nominee put forth by Trump. That too we will never know.
“I think they [Alito and Thomas] are the gold standard.”
No doubt about that.
Then they stabbed trump in the back on the election
Sure you will, Ron. And when the Uniparty starts attacking and slandering your nominees, and the RINO’s in your own party start to cave, who’s going to prevent that from deep-sixing your pick? In case you haven’t noticed, you’re not really a people person.
Your collogues don’t particularly like you. You’re considered a cold fish. Who’s going to press the flesh, make the calls and rally the party to stay firm when the left goes on the attack? I suppose you could delegate that task to someone on your staff. That would probably be your best option, because you’re not a natural born leader like Trump.
On paper, all three of Trump’s picks were good. You never know 100% how they’ll turn out until they’re in office. People can criticize the Trump nominees all they want. But all three passed a very important test with the Dobb’s decision.
Ron would be picking from the same pool of judges that Trump has done. Does he have superior intuition to peer into the future and know that a solid well credentialed conservative judge will end up disappointing once they’re on the Supreme Court? I’d have to say no. I’ve seen little evidence of it.
DeSantis will be lucky to stay in the race til SC. Much less be picking SCOTUS candidates. 😏
