Several House Republican members of the Freedom Caucus have revolted against Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) over his Debt ceiling deal with Democrat President Joe Biden.
Republicans have been outraged that McCarthy struck a deal with the Biden White House to raise the debt ceiling last month.
Twelve Republicans voted with the Democrats to defeat the GOP’s attempt to bring four bills to the House floor.
The bills were related to gas stoves and regulatory reform.
This is the first time a House rule vote has been defeated since November 2002.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) said: “Today, we took down the rule because we’re frustrated at the way this place is operating.
“We took a stand in January to end the era of the imperial speakership.
“We’re concerned that the fundamental commitments that allowed Kevin McCarthy to assume the speakership have been violated as a consequence of the debt limit deal.”
Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) said:
“We warned them not to cut that deal without coming down and sit down and talk to us.
“So this is all about restoring a process that will fundamentally change things back to what was working.”
As to McCarthy’s future as speaker, Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) said:
“I think he should be concerned.
“I’m not suggesting the votes are there to remove the speaker, but the speaker promised that we would operate at 2022 appropriations levels when he got the support to be the speaker.
The House rule is similar to cloture in the Senate. The rule must be passed for a bill to be passed.
They were show votes anyway, since Biden would’ve vetoed the bills even if they passed the House.
It’s all a little game. Senators can claim they voted to repeal the gas stove regulation because they know Biden will veto the bill.
Well that was a real quick rebuff from his victory lap over his debt limit sell-out to Biden.
A little late.
Why would NmBiden veto his own party’s bill?
Twelve heroes! Take note of those names and keep them in mind for future leadership. We desperately need men like that on our side. I’m just sad that it’s only a dozen.
Matt Gaetz should be SPEAKER!
“It’s all a little game. Senators can claim they voted to repeal the gas stove regulation because they know Biden will veto the bill.”
It may indeed all be just a game and all for show and we may indeed be getting “played”. But any time our side gives the left side even a minor headache, I’ll take it. I’ll take whatever we can get at this point. Does that mean I’m satisfied with it? Hell no. What I want to happen is a whole lot “more”. And I’ll just leave it at that.
He’s my Congresscritter..........................
There, fixed it.
That would be correct, there is no debt ceiling. I blanch whenever I hear the term they set a new debt ceiling. Thanks.
“Why would Biden veto his own party’s bill?”
It’s not his own party’s bill. The bill to repeal the gas stove regulation is a Republican bill. No Democrat bill is going to get through the Republican House (unless they use a discharge petition).
The Democrats don’t want to eliminate the gas stove regulation because they’re ALL anti-oil. But a lot of them (those up for reelection) would like to PRETEND to not be anti-oil.
Good! Kevin needs to go...Term Limits NOW!!!
YAY !
Most of the R Congresspersons from Florida are great. APL is good and a rising star, another is Bryon Daniel.
Mr Freedom Caucus himself, Jim Jordan, voted for the bill to eliminate any debt ceiling till 1/1/26. So did MTG.
And, the craziest thing? Sinator FetidBrain voted against it.
(Paul/Cruz/Lee voted against)
I am jealous.
Gaetz is our version of AOC.
YAY. Let the GOPe fight each other while Biden and his tyrants in the government continue to destroy what little is left of America.
