Money For Nothing: Universal Basic Income to Be Trialed in England
Breitbart ^ | 5 Jun 2023 | KURT ZINDULKA

A trial of universal basic income (UBI) will be trialled for the first time in England where 30 people will be given a monthly stipend with no strings attached.

The UBI scheme, to be run by the Autonomy think tank, will see 30 people given a monthly allowance of £1,600 a month without any requirements. The scheme will take place in the town of Jarrow in the North East of England and in the East Finchley area of North London, Sky News reports.

The pilot scheme will also draft a control group that won’t receive the free cash, in order for the researchers to measure the impact of the money on the lives of the participants.

The director of research at Autonomy Will Stronge said: “All the evidence shows that it would directly alleviate poverty and boost millions of people’s wellbeing: the potential benefits are just too large to ignore.”

However, opponents of the socialist-style scheme express concerns that giving people a universal basic income would create perverse incentives that could have massive ramifications on the labour market.

Others have noted that for a government to enact such a system, it would require a major overhaul of the tax and benefits systems, as well as putting a heavy strain on public finances, which have been in disarray in the UK following the spending spree during the Chinese coronavirus crisis during which the government paid businesses to remain shuttered and for workers to remain home.

Results from previous UBI trials have also indicated that wealth transfers could have the opposite outcome from the alleged noble intentions of proponents.

Not advocating this, but just doing a reality check.

I can see universal income as a possible solution if AI + Robotics causes severe labor displacement.

380 million Americans * $500 a month = $180 billion.

That actually seems doable given our annual Federal budget is $6.2 trillion and our annual GNP is $25 trillion.

$500 isn’t much to live on, but average SNAP benefits are estimated to be $182 a month. And universal income would be much cheaper to administer than an eligibility needs based program.

One thing I think they should do is either put all the assistance programs under one office or at least have all the data feed into one office to ensure that total assistance never becomes unreasonable.

Money For Nothing: Universal Basic Income to Be Trialed in England

It's not "money for nothing". It's money for subservience to the state. If the government is paying you money, you work for the government. The work may not be anything useful for the national economy, but you will work for your money - you will do what the state tells you to do.

Revised: transvestites over 70.

HT was just an example of what to expect appearance wise - all the pretty transvestites are already taken and not on the free list.

Why?

All we have to do is print more money!

Duh!

Just like we did during the Chinese coronavirus crisis.

The study is stupid. It does not address the anticipated problems of such a policy.

I’ve said this before:

If we gave everyone a basic income, we could also take away a lot of expensive entitlements. With a basic income each recipient would be responsible for spending it wisely and if they didn’t they’d get no further government help.

This scheme might reduce our cost for supporting the poor or whatever you want to call them.

It’s not possible to test a “universal” basic income on a small group of people. Elementary logic. Universal = all, subset = NOT all.

So this would not be a test at all.

Obviously, it’s going to be declared a success. The recipients are all going to say that they were glad to receive the money.

The disaster begins when the “trial” is turned into an entitlement for all. The taxes that must be collected to provide this benefit will be enormous. Plus it will cost money to administer the program, and that will raise the cost by what percent?

After a short time the recipients will demand more. And that will not be enough, so they will escalate their demands.

One result will be that many will stop working - because they now have enough money, or because it’s no longer sensible to work when a huge percentage is confiscated for taxes.

The final result is disaster. It’ll take some time, but the final outcome is certain.

We have places in the United States doing this. No news on success or failure. To be honest, id hate to be one of the chosen and then the city decides to drop the program. It’s much more difficult to lose money then have it at all. Of course, I’ll never be chosen unless 300 million are chosen, then I might have a shot. Lol.

Could, but won't. UBI would be in addition to the welfare already received. Big Gov isn't about to defund their most reliable voting bloc.
