Hong Kongers living overseas are helping to keep the flame of remembrance alive for the victims of China’s Tiananmen massacre as authorities in a city that once hosted huge annual vigils continue to stamp out dissent.
Until recently Hong Kong was the only place within China where large-scale gatherings each June 4 were tolerated to remember the moment in 1989 when the Communist Party sent tanks in to violently quell peaceful student-led democracy protests in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square.
But the annual candlelight vigils have been silenced the last three years in the wake of pandemic restrictions and Beijing’s ongoing political crackdown in Hong Kong, which was upended by its own huge democracy protests in 2019.
This year is set to be no different.

A student assistant who was an anti-Communist Christian young woman from China said “how could a person be so stupid as to think a stunt like that could change anything?” She heard the numbers were in the low thousands for his type who were quickly killed after that day. Totally out of the news, of course.
My idea: The antiwar movement, third parties on ballots, Haight Ashbury, Woodstock and others gave hope of peaceful change. Naive.
Fighting in the open face to face is useless. My opinion.
Someone on FR has posted the Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn quote I cannot locate about how common people could have eliminated the agents one by one quietly long before all of the victims being herded together to go to gulags to die. Then it was much too late.

Yes, indeed.
The first time I saw that photo was in connection with a Marxist on Twitter, I believe, who claims that the massacre is just a hoax perpetrated by the West. The Chinese government is now pushing that story, as though the tanks and all the other manifold repressions don’t say something in and of themselves. Also, because the Square protesters were largely killed elsewhere nearby, they try to dismiss it all as myth.
