Over the last five days of May, Ruslan, an English teacher in a Russian town near the Ukrainian border, heard the distinct sound of a multiple rocket launcher strike for the first time. Shelling would begin around 3 a.m., sometimes shaking his house, and continue through the morning.
He had heard the thud of explosions in distant villages in the past, he said, and in October shelling damaged a nearby shopping mall. But nothing like this.
“Everything changed,” he said.
Fifteen months after Russian missiles first roared toward Kyiv, residents of the Russian border region of Belgorod are starting to understand the horror of having war on their doorstep.
Shebekino, a town of 40,000 six miles from the border, has effectively become a new part of the front line as Ukraine has intensified attacks inside Russia, including on residential areas near its own borders. The spate of assaults, most recently by militia groups aligned against Moscow, has sparked the largest military evacuation effort in Russia in decades.
“The town became a ghost in 24 hours,” said Ruslan, 27, who evacuated on Thursday after a sustained campaign of shelling.
In the last several days, The New York Times interviewed more than half a dozen residents of the border region to get a sense of the deepening anxiety among Russian civilians. Like Ruslan, most insisted on being identified by only their first names, citing a fear of retribution for speaking about the war.
“Shebekino was a wonderful, flowery town on the border with Ukraine filled with happy, neighborly people,” said Darya, 37, a local public sector employee. “Now only pain, death and misery live in our town. There is no power, no public transport, no open businesses, no residents. Just an empty, shattered town in smoke.”

Which site would you prefer to report on this? Because the NY Times isn’t the only one.
To be fair, when the Russian were killing Ukrainian citizens, Russian cheerleaders were saying it was just part of war.
I believe the Russians aren’t “stalled out”. They are waiting on the vaunted “spring offensive” to begin.
...and waiting.....
Yep. And that travesty was never rescinded.
Yeah man, I hear ya! I'm looking forward to the world famous Ghost Of Kiev™ to blast them there Russkies from the sky! Hoo-rah!!
Brilliant idea...
Ukraine is deliberately attacking Russia and mocking Vladimir Putin, the dictator who controls the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons in the world.
Hooray, for us!
What could possibly go wrong?
NYT?
Head Shake.
There must be Russian regime change. Biden said it and people thought it was senility.. it wasn’t. They must have a globalists in Russia. They require Russian natural resources and slave labor to get them.
I have not heard much about whom they are grooming as a puppet. It’s funny that zelensky dances, because I see him as a puppet and they have pulled his strings…
Of course that may not be to move him, but boy does he get paid. Taxpayer Ca$h.
We must be out of Afghanistan lithium. The greenies are like locusts… consuming everything in their path.
“...the piece above does not acknowledge that Russia fought Germany ...”
While not acknowledging that Russia fought Germany, the piece above also does NOT point out that Stalin first signed an agreement with Hitler and the 2 countries split Poland between them. Only after Hitler pulled a fast one and attacked Russia, did Stalin then fight those dirty, sneaky Germans. US pro Russia propaganda was always complaining that FDR wanted war, but after the German attack on Russia, that propaganda switched real fast.
When I went to college in a mid-west farming state, I heard some Republican fraternity boys singing this song:
“Franklin Roosevelt told the people how he felt,
they almost believed what he said.
He said, I hate war and so does Eleanor,
but we won’t be safe ‘til everyone is dead.”
This was in the late 1950s. I went home near New York City and told my mother this song. She laughed, and said “if those fraternity boys only knew what they were singing. That was a Communist song sung to keep the US from fighting Hitler, but after Hitler broke the agreement, they were singing a very different song.”
“I feel this is out-there propaganda. Russians know what the horrors of war are - citizens fought German soldiers in hand to hand combat to protect Moscow. They went toe to toe with Hitler’s war machine.”
You should stop trusting your feelings and start using your head. WWII ended in 1945. Only a tiny number of Russians are are 83 or more years old - whish is how old they would have to be to know any of the horrors of the war. In 2017 only 500,000 Russians were 82 years old. Thus, virtually none of the Russian people now seeing war first hand ever saw ANYTHING in WWII.
Those are the facts.
.....and the misery gets worse everyday...and Dr. Z somehow has time and safe passage to make the “case” for more arms and money in so many different venues..something about all the bilateral contradictory inflated verbage screams...fake reporting everywhere...first click-bait fueled war reporting..follow the money instead..
May God bless and protect Ukraine and all Ukrainians
“Because the Ukrainians lost Bakmut, they are targeting citizens in terrorist attacks.”
Since Russia failed at taking all of Ukraine after their invasion, Russia turned to a terror war against Ukrainian citizens. There are not enough attacks inside of Russia and Moscow. Fair is fair.
.
I believe that was the point that there were tactical as well as operational purposes to the “incursions”. As a recall a valuable EW vehicle was captured as well as several other pieces destroyed.
What it also did was force Russians to redistribute forces, something they can I’ll afford to do
IMO you will see several of these in Russia and Ukraine to forcenrussians to reallocate forces, moving forces not only weaken other parts of the line but moving forces are more susceptible to interdiction
“Because the Ukrainians lost Bakmut, they are targeting citizens in terrorist attacks. The Russian citizens thought this was military to military war and the Ukraine has made it clear they will attack non combatants directly, to distract from their losses and keep the money flowing “
Have you missed the first 15 months?
Rocket and missile attacks on cities and civilians all across Ukraine has been happening since day one, you are welcome to you own opinion, but that comment is pure BS
An attack on Moscow that did little damage months into the was is a “terrorist” attack, but Russians razing entire Ukrainian cities is “liberation”?
Nah, jog on
Odd, the Russian separatists who attacked Belgorod speak Polish.

I haven’t seen a video of more than maybe a dozen “Russian Volunteer Corps” soldiers in action. Yet the Russian government has abandoned a city of 45,000. This just proves how incredibly weak and overstretched Russia is right now.
SORTA LIKE WHEN ILLEGAL INVADERS SHOW UP IN YOUR SANCTUARY CITY???
