It does look like the Ukrainian armed forces are liberating Ukraine from Putin’s invasion force
“Around 1990 Ukraine declared independence from the Soviet Union. Around 2014 Donetsk and Luhansk in turn declared independence from Ukraine”
Those were different in the following ways
1. Ukraine and Russia agreed to dissolve the USSR. the Ukrainian SSR had been de jure “independent” since the 1930s with it having its own UN seat.
2. Donetsk and Luhansk had armed insurrections led by Russian nationals. This was not a peaceful secession, nor a voted upon on — note that the subsequent referenda occurred post population changes so is in no way a reflection of what the people of 2014 wanted.
