Newark Cardinal Urges Faithful to Forgo 2nd Amendment Rights

Newark Cardinal Joseph Tobin has launched an appeal to Catholics to voluntarily forgo their Second Amendment rights by refusing to bear arms.

“It’s true that we have a second amendment right to bear arms, but rights always involve responsibilities — in this case, the responsibility to protect the innocent and to secure public safety and good order,” the cardinal declares in a recent pastoral letter. “The mass shootings we are witnessing almost weekly now are a grave threat to the lives and well-being of all people.”

In what he calls his “most challenging and controversial proposal,” Tobin urges “voluntary self-restraint” involving the waiving of the right to purchase and own firearms.

And just exactly HOW is one supposed to "protect the innocent and secure public safety" without having the MEANS to do so?

Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, former apostolic nuncio to the United States, released a letter describing a series of warnings to the Vatican regarding alleged sexual misconduct by then-cardinal Theodore McCarrick, a predecessor of Tobin in Newark. Viganò claimed that McCarrick “orchestrated” the appointment of Tobin as Archbishop of Newark.

Tobin welcomed a “pilgrimage” of gay and lesbian Catholics and their families to the archdiocese’s cathedral in 2017.

Tobin supported the 2017 book called Building a Bridge, by Father James Martin, SJ, which called for the church to modify its relationship with LGBT people. Tobin commented that “in too many parts of our church, LGBT people have been made to feel unwelcome, excluded, and even shamed. Father Martin’s brave, prophetic, and inspiring new book marks an essential step in inviting church leaders to minister with more compassion, and in reminding LGBT Catholics that they are as much a part of our church as any other Catholic.”

One journalist claims that in a conversation with Tobin that he said that around the time he came to Newark in 2016 he heard “rumors” about McCarrick having slept with seminarians, but chose not to believe them, stating that at the time they seemed too “incredulous” to be true.

On August 17, 2018, the Catholic News Agency reported that six Newark priests had alleged experiences of sexual misconduct by two priests in seminary and ministry in the archdiocese. Tobin responded with a letter to the priests of Newark on the same day, saying that he had been unaware of the issue. He concluded the letter by encouraging priests to refer media inquiries to the archdiocesan director of communications

The Catholic church is the reason why they come across the border from Mexico, etc. The church has been pushing free stuff from the USA for decades.

This is a bit off the subject but if anyone happens to run across Newark Cardinal Joseph Tobin ask him if he has any idea why Father John used do flash his junk to us altar boys before early morning mass. Or why numerous priests used to try to mess with us when we were in high school.

Never mind that guns are used thousands of times daily to protect lives and 98% of mass-shootings occur in your holy “gun-free zones.”

If you really wanted to stop mass-shootings you would outlaw “gun-free zones,” Padre, but you ain’t interested in that. You are only interested in empty virtue-signaling and forcing people to obey you.

FACT: Guns prevent an estimated 2.5 million crimes a year or 6,849 every day. 98+% of the time the gun is not fired and no blood (including the criminal’s) is shed.

Didn’t Jews take the same approach in 1930’s Germany? That didn’t work out so well. I need to increase my ammo supply from 1000 to 2000 rounds.

His is a rather stupid position

That’s what “rights” are. I may not choose to use free-speech, as I am content to just stay home and keep quiet. Same with 2nd amendment. I may also choose not to own a gun - and perhaps the Cardinal may want to make an appeal to that.

But if he says - we should allow certain parts of the government to remove our right to own a gun. That’s asinine. Moreover, its pathetic that he is trying to manufacture some kind of Christian theology to cover his position.

Proposition: Bad people use guns to harm innocent people.
Solution: Disarm the innocent.

I'm thinking he slept through logic class.
