San Francisco Mayor London Breed is pushing back against reports of a retail “collapse” in the city’s downtown, saying that the departure of many high-end stores is the result of “changes to retail” in the economy in general.
As Breitbart News has reported, there is an ongoing retail exodus from San Francisco, particularly in the area around Union Square and Market Street, at the terminus of the city’s famed cable car, where tourists arrive.
The reasons are many, but chief among them is the rise of crime in the downtown area, which spiked with the emergence of “mass looting” events, and persisted in a wave of shoplifting, homelessness, and drug abuse.

50% of all businesses in the downtown area have closed.
And it is NOT due to “changes in the business climate” - it is due to rampant shoplifting and the fact that drug-addled and mentally ill homeless rule the streets. Entire area smells like urine.
WHO is going to go down there to go shopping? Who wants to step over needles and human feces and watch people shoot up in plain view right on the sidewalk? People are reporting that their cars are being broken into - or the windows smashed out for no reason - in the parking structures in the area. One person said her windows were smashed out and her back seat ripped out - in the parking structure next to the soon-to-be closed Nordstrom’s.
This is what the mayor chooses to ignore - as do the people of SF who voted her in.
