I honestly agree, she went too far.
When she posed for propaganda photos in an AA gun that actively shot down and killed US soldiers she should have been given the death penalty. As a starlet she would have set a great example.

Of course the left would have revolted in civil war of some sort but at that time most of the country was overwhelmingly traditionalist and patriotic. It would have been an easy victory and we would probably be far better off today.
